Steps:
- 1. Sift flour; measure; add baking powder, soda, salt, and spices; sift again.
- 2. Cream shortening; add sugar gradually; cream together until light and fluffy.
- 3. Add unbeaten eggs one at a time beating thoroughly after each addition.
- 4. Add dry ingredients alternately with sour milk or buttermilk, stirring only enough after each addition to blend thoroughly.
- 5. Pour into a greased pan 13 by 9 by2 inches. (My mother made a round 2 layer cake)
- 6. Bake in a moderate oven (350 F.) 45 to 50 minutes.
- 7. When cool spread with any desired frosting. (My mother used Burnt Sugar Frosting.)
