French Onion Shepherd's Pie Recipe - These Old Cookbooks image

French Onion Shepherd's Pie takes a traditional ground beef shepherd pie and jazzes it up by using condensed French Onion Soup as the gravy.

Number Of Ingredients 12

1 pound ground beef
1 small onion, diced (optional)
1/2 cup carrots, sliced
2 Tablespoons flour
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
10.5 ounce condensed French Onion soup
1/2 cup water
22-24 ounces prepared mashed potatoes
1 egg
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1 teaspoon salt (optional)
1/2 cup shredded Swiss cheese

Steps:

  • Prepare a 11 x 7 inch dish by spraying with nonstick cooking spray. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
  • Brown ground beef and onions; drain excess grease.
  • Add sliced carrots, flour, pepper, water and French onion soup and bring to a gentle simmer for 5 minutes.
  • Pour mixture into the bottom of the dish.
  • Mix together mashed potatoes, salt, pepper and egg.
  • Spread over top the ground beef mixture.
  • Bake for 25 minutes.
  • Sprinkle with shredded Swiss Cheese; bake for an additional 5 minutes.
