Yield 2 loaves
Number Of Ingredients 8
Steps:
- Combine 3 cups flour, yeast, sugar, salt and soda. Heat milk and water until very warm (120-130°F). Add to dry mixture. Beat well. Stir in the rest of the flour to make a stiff batter (should be really sticky). Prepare two 8 1/2 X 4 1/2" loaf pans by greasing generously with Crisco and dusting with cornmeal. Spoon batter into the loaf pans and cover with paper towel or greased plastic wrap. Let rise in a warm place for up to 45 minutes (it could take only 30 minutes). Bake at 400° for 25 minutes. Surface of loaf will be flat and pale in color. Remove from pans immediately. [The original recipe call for an alternative cooking method: microwave each loaf on high power for 6 min, 30 sec. Allow to rest 5 min before removing from pan. I have never tried this method.]
