From my mother-in-law's recipe collection.

Number Of Ingredients 15

1 1/2 cup(s) all purpose flour
1 cup(s) sugar
1 1/2 teaspoon(s) baking powder
1/2 teaspoon(s) salt
3/4 cup(s) milk
1/3 cup(s) shortening
1 - egg
1 teaspoon(s) vanilla
- french silk frosting (below)
FOR FRENCH SILK FROSTING
1/3 cup(s) butter, softened
1 1/3 cup(s) powdered sugar
1 ounce(s) melted unsweetened chocolate (cool)
1/2 teaspoon(s) vanilla
1 tablespoon(s) milk

Steps:

  • Heat oven to 350. Grease and flour square pan, 8x8x2 or 9x9x2 inches, or round pan, 9x1 1/2 inches. Beat all ingredients except frosting in large mixer bowl on low speed, scraping bowl constantly, 30 seconds. Beat on high speed, scraping bowl occasionally, 3 minutes. Pour into pan.
  • Bake until wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean, square 35-40 minutes, round 35 minutes; cool. Frost with French Silk Frosting.
  • For French Silk Frosting: Beat butter, powdered sugar, chocolate, and vanilla on low speed until blended. Gradually beat in milk until fluffy.
