Date Bars image

This is another recipe from my husband's family. It's considered top secret by some, but I'm willing to take the risk and share it with y'all! :)

Number Of Ingredients 8

3 c chopped dates
1/4 c sugar
1 1/2 c water
1 1/2 c uncooked rolled oats - quick cook (not instant) oatmeal
1 c brown sugar
1 3/4 c sifted all purpose flour
1/2 tsp salt
3/4 c shortening

Steps:

  • 1. Combine chopped dates, sugar and water in a sauce pan and cook about 10 minutes, stirring frequently to keep from sticking. Set aside and let cool.
  • 2. Combine in a bowl using your hands to mix the rolled oats, brown sugar, flour, salt and shortening.
  • 3. Spread 1/2 of the oatmeal mixture into a 9x13" pan and pat down evenly. Top with the date mixture, spreading it evenly over the crust.
  • 4. Spread the rest of the oat mixture on top evenly and bake at 400 degrees until ightly browned around the edges, about 25-30 minutes.
  • 5. Let cool and cut into bars.
