Chocolate Nut Bread image

Favorite from S. Adler. This bread freezes well.

Number Of Ingredients 12

1/2 cup(s) cut up dates
1 - 4 ounce german chocolate bar
3 cup(s) boiled water
3 teaspoon(s) baking soda
2 1/2 cup(s) sugar
1/2 cup(s) butter or margarine
3 - eggs
4 1/2 cup(s) all purpose flour
1 pinch(es) salt
1 cup(s) chopped walnuts or pecans
3 teaspoon(s) vanilla extract
1 1/2 cup(s) maraschino cherries, cut in half

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  • Dissolve soda in hot water and pour over dates and chocolate. Let stand to cool.
  • Cream sugar, butter, and eggs. Add cooled date and water mixture alternately with flour.
  • Add nuts, vanilla and cherries. Batter is thin.
  • Grease and flour bread pans, fill 1/2 full.
  • Bake 50-60 minutes or until tests done with a pick.
