1 1/2 cup chopped dates
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 cup boiling water
3/4 cup shortening
1-1/4 cups sugar, divided
2 eggs
1 1/3 cups all-purpose flour
4 1/2 teaspoons unsweetened cocoa powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 1/4 cups (12 ounces) semisweet chocolate chips
1 cup chopped walnuts

Steps:

Preheat oven to 350° and spray 13 x 9 baking pan with nonstick spray. Place dates and 1 teaspoon baking soda in a large bowl. Stir in boiling water; cool completely. In another large bowl, cream shortening and 1 cup sugar. Beat in eggs one at a time. Combine the flour, salt and cocoa powder; add to creamed mixture alternately with date mixture. Pour into a greased 13-in. x 9-in. baking pan. Sprinkle with remaining sugar; walnuts, and chocolate chips. Bake at 350° for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean. Cool on a wire rack.
