Axle's Easy Barbecue Sauce image

I created this recipe in college as a way to cook a great barbecue sauce from the spices in my kitchen without having any fresh ingredients available. Substituting fresh alternatives can only improve the recipe!

1 cup ketchup
½ cup lemon juice
¼ cup water
¼ cup brown sugar
¼ cup garlic powder
3 tablespoons olive oil
2 tablespoons paprika
1 tablespoon chili powder
2 ½ teaspoons honey
2 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon dry mustard
1 teaspoon onion powder
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
½ teaspoon ground black pepper
3 drops hot sauce

Steps:

  • Combine ketchup, lemon juice, water, brown sugar, garlic powder, olive oil, paprika, chili powder, honey, salt, dry mustard, onion powder, Worcestershire sauce, cayenne pepper, ground black pepper, and hot sauce together in a large saucepan; cook, stirring occasionally, over medium heat until sauce is smooth and thickened, 45 minutes to 1 hour.
