Apple Crumble (Award Winning) image

I found this recipe in the Taste of Home magazine that won the grand prize in their Crisp and Cobblers contest. Thanks to Carol Simpkins for this one.

8 sheets phyllo dough
1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
4 medium tart apples, peeled and sliced
butter-flavored cooking spray
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
1/2 cup whole wheat bread crumbs
1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 cup butter, cold
1/4 cup almonds, slivered

Steps:

  • Cut phyllo in half, spritz with butter-flavored spray.
  • Layer phyllo with sprayed side up, in a greased 8 inch square baking dish.
  • In a large bowl, combine the brown sugar, flour, ginger, and cinnamon.
  • Add apples and toss to coat.
  • Spoon over phyllo dough.
  • Topping:.
  • In a bowl combine bread crumbs, flour, brown sugar, ginger, and cinnamon.
  • Cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse bread crumbs.
  • Add almonds.
  • Sprinkle over apple mixture.
  • Bake at 350°F for 40- 45 minutes or until filling is bubbly and topping is golden.
  • Cool for 10 minutes before serving.
