2 large onions, grated
1 teaspoon white sugar
1 egg
¾ cup vegetable oil
¼ cup warm water
4 teaspoons poppy seeds
1 teaspoon baking powder
½ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon ground black pepper
2 cups flour

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C).
  • Lightly grease a baking sheet or line with baking parchment.
  • Mix onions, sugar, egg, vegetable oil, and warm water in a large bowl with an electric mixer until well combined.
  • Mix the baking powder, salt, pepper, and poppy seeds into the onion mixture.
  • Beat the flour into the onion mixture in batches with the mixer set to Low speed until incorporated into a dough.
  • Drop dough by the tablespoon onto the prepared baking sheet.
  • Bake in the preheated oven until golden brown on top, 20 to 30 minutes.

There is something about the taste of onion in bread that just makes my mouth water. I found this wonderful recipe and photo in a Taste of Home cookbook.

Number Of Ingredients 9

1 medium onion, finely chopped
2 c all purpose flour
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp brown sugar
3/4 tsp poppy seeds
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/4 c (1/2 stick) cold butter, cubed
1 c buttermilk

Steps:

  • 1. In a small nonstick skillet coated with cooking spray, saute the onion until tender; set aside.
  • 2. In a large bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, brown sugar, poppy seeds, salt and baking soda. Cut in the butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  • 3. Stir in the onions. Stir in the buttermilk just until moistened.
  • 4. Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface; knead 6-8 times. Pat to 1/2-in. thickness; cut with a floured 2-1/2-in. biscuit cutter.
  • 5. Place biscuits 2 inches apart on baking sheets coated with cooking spray.
  • 6. Bake in a preheated 450-degree oven for 9-12 minutes or until golden brown. Serve warm.
  • 7. NOTE: If you don't have buttermilk, you may substitute 1 Tbsp. of white vinegar or lemon juice and enough milk to measure a total of 1 cup (for 1 cup buttermilk).
