Pintos and Sausage- these beans cook up super creamy and tender, perfectly flavored with sausage in every bite.

Number Of Ingredients 14

1 pound dried pinto beans
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 medium onion, (diced)
1 green bell pepper, (diced)
1 pound smoked sausage, (sliced)
2 garlic cloves, (minced)
6 cups water
2 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon pepper
1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
1/2 teaspoon dried basil
1/2 teaspoon paprika
1/4 teaspoon dried thyme
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper

Steps:

  • Rinse and drain the beans and place in a large bowl. Cover beans with water, cover the bowl and refrigerate overnight.
  • Heat oil in a Dutch oven and saute the onion, green pepper, and sausage until onion becomes translucent.
  • Add garlic and cook 1 minute.
  • Drain beans and add to pot along with 6 cups of water. Bring to a boil and then simmer 60 minutes. Watch the water level and add more if neccesary to keep beans covered.
  • Add remaining ingredients and simmer 30 more minutes, or until beans are tender.

1 pound ground pork sausage (breakfast, hot or mild)
1 medium onion, chopped
1 green pepper, chopped
15 ounces canned pinto beans, undrained
8 ounces tomato sauce

Steps:

  • In a large skillet, fry up sausage breaking it up in small chunks as it cooks.
  • If needed, drain off excess oil off sausage, leaving 2 tablespoons in the pan with sausage.
  • Add chopped onions and peppers, and sauté until soft and tender.
  • Pour in undrained pinto beans and tomato sauce; simmer for 10 minutes.
  • Serve with cornbread if desired.

This is my simple version of pinto beans and ham. It's just a basic recipe with no frills. My husband always enjoys this version. Serve with cornbread.

14 cups water, divided
2 cups dried pinto beans
1 ham bone with meat
1 large red onion, chopped
2 teaspoons garlic, minced
1 teaspoon ham base (such as Better than Bouillon®)
1 dash hot pepper sauce (such as Tabasco®), or to taste
1 pinch salt and ground black pepper to taste

Steps:

  • Bring 8 cups water and pinto beans to a boil in a large pot. Remove pot from heat, cover, and let stand for 1 hour. Drain and rinse before using.
  • Transfer pinto beans to a slow cooker. Add ham bone, red onion, minced garlic, and ham base. Pour in remaining 6 cups of water, or enough to cover the beans.
  • Cool on Low until beans are tender, about 8 hours.
  • Remove the ham bone, shred meat, and add back to the beans. Discard the bone. Serve hot, seasoned with hot sauce, salt, and pepper.

I learned to make pinto beans from my Grandma, who came from Oklahoma. I've added to the recipe, and my Mother used to say mine were the best beans she'd ever tasted. Serve the Southern way - with cornbread and steamed greens.

1 pound dried pinto beans
6 cups water, or more as needed to cover
1 smoked ham hock
1 teaspoon kosher salt
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1 (6.5 ounce) can tomato sauce

Steps:

  • Cover pinto beans with water in a large bowl. Soak beans for 4 hours, changing water every 30 to 45 minutes. Drain.
  • Bring 6 cups water to a boil in a large pot. Add pinto beans, ham hock, and kosher salt to the pot. Pour in more water if needed to cover ingredients by at least 1 inch.
  • Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer until beans are just tender, 2 to 3 hours.
  • Remove ham hock from beans; cut meat from the bone, chop the ham, and return to pot.
  • Stir tomato sauce and brown sugar into the beans. Continue to simmer until beans are tender and flavors are blended, about 1 more hour.

1-1/2 pounds bulk spicy pork sausage
1 medium green pepper, chopped
1 medium onion, chopped
1 can (31 ounces) pork and beans
1 can (16 ounces) kidney beans, rinsed and drained
1 can (15-1/2 ounces) great northern beans, rinsed and drained
1 can (15-1/2 ounces) black-eyed peas, rinsed and drained
1 can (15 ounces) pinto beans, rinsed and drained
1 can (15 ounces) chickpeas, rinsed and drained
1-1/2 cups ketchup
3/4 cup packed brown sugar
2 teaspoons ground mustard

Steps:

1 lb dried pinto bean, sorted and washed
5 cups water
1 large onion, chopped
4 -8 ounces cooked ham, chopped
3 garlic cloves, minced
1/2 cup chopped green pepper
1 tablespoon chili powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon pepper
1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
1/4 teaspoon dried oregano

Steps:

  • Cover beans with water and soak overnight; drain.
  • Place beans in a 5- or 6-quart slow cooker/Crock Pot with water and remaining ingredients.
  • Cover cooker and cook on low setting for 9-10 hours, or until beans are soft and done. Stir a couple of times during cooking, if possible. Serve with cornbread, rice, a green salad or slaw.
