PHILLY CHEESESTEAK SLOPPY JOES

Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joes image

All the taste of the famous sandwich but made easy using ground beef and an optional homemade provolone cheese sauce. In a pinch, you can use sliced provolone cheese or cheez whiz instead.

Time 30m

Yield 4 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 15

1 tablespoon olive oil
1 lb ground beef
1 large onion, chopped
1 green pepper, chopped
3 tablespoons steak sauce, I like A-1
1/2 cup beef broth
salt and black pepper, to taste
1 dash Worcestershire sauce (optional)
4 large hamburger buns
1 tablespoon butter, for toasting buns
provolone cheese (sliced) or Cheez Whiz
1 tablespoon butter
1 tablespoon flour
1 cup milk
1 cup provolone cheese (shredded)

Steps:

  • Add the oil to a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and cook 5-6 minutes or until no longer pink. Add the onion and bell pepper and continue to cook 2-3 minutes or until crisp tender. Drain off any fat. Stir in the steak sauce and beef broth (and Worcestershire, if using). Season with salt and pepper. Cook until liquid is gone.
  • Butter the cut sides of the buns. Toast the buttered sides in a hot skillet on medium-high heat. Set aside.
  • To make the cheese sauce, melt the butter in a 1-quart saucepan over medium-high heat. Whisk in the flour and cook about 1 minute. Whisk in milk, bring up to a bubble and cook until thickened. Remove from heat and stir in the cheese. Season with salt and pepper, if desired.
  • To serve, place a scoop of the meat mixture onto the bottom half of the buns. Top with cheese sauce (or cheese) and cover with the top half of the bun.

PHILLY CHEESESTEAK SLOPPY JOES

Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joes image

This Philly cheesesteak sloppy joe may be a bite-size sandwich but it's big of flavor. Onions and green bell peppers really give the overall meat tons of flavor. The small amount of steak sauce is just enough to add a little tang. Topping with a provolone cheese sauce is delicious. The sauce is creamier than melting a slice of...

PHILLY CHEESESTEAK SLOPPY JOES

Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joes image

This is a great take on a sloppy joe. It has the onion, pepper and cheese flavor from a Philly cheesesteak but uses ground beef like a sloppy joe. We opted to use Cheez Whiz when testing and loved how it melts into the meat. Provolone cheese would be delicious too. Served on a toasted bun your family is going to gobble it up. They may not be the prettiest when served, but boy is this good.

Number Of Ingredients 15

1 pound(s) ground beef
1 tablespoon(s) butter
1 - Spanish onion (diced)
1 - green or red bell pepper (seeded & diced)
1 cup(s) beef stock
1/4 teaspoon(s) granulated garlic
1/2 teaspoon(s) granulated onion
- salt and pepper, to taste
- bread or buns of choice
CHOICE OF CHEESE (PROVOLONE)
5 slice(s) provolone cheese
- half & half or milk, until desired consistancy
CHOICE OF CHEESE (CHEEZ-WIZ)
1/2 cup(s) Cheez Whiz
- half & half or milk, until desired consistancy

Steps:

  • Add 1 tbsp butter to the pan.
  • Add ground beef. Break up until desired size and cook until browned.
  • Depending on how tender or crunchy you like your peppers and onions add them to the skillet. If you like a lot of crunch, add them towards the end of the cooking the ground beef. If you like them soft, but still tender like I do, add them with the meat at the beginning.)
  • Once the beef is browned, add your salt, pepper, onion powder, and garlic granules. Stir.
  • Add the beef stock and stir.
  • Choose your cheese. If you chose provolone, add all the slices, cover until melted. Stir and add milk or half & half until desired consistency. If Cheez Whiz was chosen, do the very same thing, except don't add the provolone... But I probably didn't have to tell you that, lol.
  • Serve hot on your bun, bread or hoagie roll of choice. And enjoy!!! :)

Ingredients
1 tablespoon EVOO - Extra Virgin Olive Oil
1 pound ground sirloin
1 softball-sized onion, chopped
1/4 cup steak sauce
1 cup beef stock
Salt and ground black pepper
4 dinner rolls
1 tablespoon butter
1 tablespoon flour
1 cup milk
1 cup provolone, shredded
For the salad:
1/2 pound salami, chopped
1/4 pound provolone cheese, chopped
1 head Bibb lettuce
1 bunch arugula
2 tablespoons EVOO - Extra Virgin Olive Oil
1 tablespoon red wine vinegar

Steps:

  • Preparation Preheat broiler. In large skillet over medium-high heat with 1 turn of the pan of EVOO, brown the ground sirloin, about 5-6 minutes. Add the onion and cook another 3-4 minutes, until the onions start to get tender. Stir in the steak sauce and beef stock, season with salt and pepper, bring up to a bubble and cook about 2 minutes. Split open rolls and toast under broiler, keep your eye on them so they don't burn! While the meat is cooking, melt the butter in a medium-size skillet over medium-high heat. Stir in the flour and cook about 1 minute. Whisk in milk, bring up to a bubble and let thicken, about 2 minutes. Turn off heat and stir the cheese in a figure-eight motion until it is all incorporated. In a salad bowl, toss the salami, cheese, Bibb lettuce and arugula with the EVOO and red wine vinegar. Season with salt and pepper to taste. To serve, place a scoopful of the meat mixture onto the bottom of the rolls, then top with the cheese sauce and replace the top of the roll. Serve the salad alongside.
