Ham, Gruyere and Apple Panini image

Number Of Ingredients 7

2 tablespoons unsalted butter, at room temperature
2 Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored and cut into 1/4-inch thick slices
1 tablespoon chopped fresh thyme leaves
8 (1/2-inch) thick slices country-style white bread
1/2 cup whole-grain mustard
2 cups (8 ounces) shredded Gruyere
8 slices (8-ounces) Black Forest ham

Steps:

  • In a 12-inch skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the apple slices and thyme. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the apples are slightly soft, about 4 minutes. Cool for 5 minutes.
  • Preheat a panini press. Spread each bread slice with 1 tablespoon mustard. Arrange 1/4 cup of cheese on each of 4 bread slices and top with 2 slices of ham. Divide the apple mixture evenly on top of the ham. Add the remaining cheese and cover with the remaining 4 bread slices. Grill in the panini press until the cheese has melted and the tops are golden and crispy, about 5 to 6 minutes.

A caterer friend made these to test, and my goodness, wow! She did not give me exact brand of ingredients, but I'm sure as long as you use good quality ingredients, it will be just as tasty as hers. It definitely had the OMG factor to it!

2 slices whole grain bread
1 apple, sliced thin (preferably a sweet variety with soft skin)
1 slice thick cheddar cheese
2 -3 slices thin honey-roasted ham
1 -2 tablespoon apple butter, sweet brand
thyme
rosemary

Steps:

  • Core and slice apple thinly, leaving the skin on.
  • Place cheese on one slice of bread.
  • Place Ham on other slice of bread.
  • Layer Apples, about 5-6 pieces, on top of cheese.
  • Spread Apple Butter on Ham.
  • Enclose the sandwich.
  • Sprinkle a pinch of thyme and rosemary on both sides of bread and press in a Panini or George Foreman grill until cheese is melting and both sides are toasted.

My obsession with my panini press continues! This is a nice little sandwich, especially for the fall. The dijon balances the sweet apples & cinnamon nicely. My friend just told me about using mayonnaise to coat the outer slices of bread for panini, and it is wonderful!

3 slices smoked ham, thinly sliced
1 slice swiss cheese
1 apple (any kind peeled & cut in large slices)
mayonnaise, dijon, cinnamon
2 slices crusty italian bread
fresh spinach (optional)

Steps:

  • 1. Ingredients listed above are for each sandwich. Heat the panini press. Toss the apple slices with cinnamon & grill these for a few on the panini press.
  • 2. Spread one side of each bread slice with mayonnaise. (This will be the outer side to cook. Makes a lovely crust).
  • 3. Spread inside of bread (one slice) with dijon. Lay slices of ham on top. Then, layer with Swiss, and grilled apples. Add some fresh spinach leaves, if you like. Put other slice of bread on top & grill on panini press until nice & golden. Enjoy!
