Mashed Sweet Potatoes Recipe with Chipotle image

This is my favorite creamy mashed sweet potatoes recipe with spicy chipotle, perfect for the holiday table or for anyone who loves sweet potatoes.

Number Of Ingredients 6

2 large sweet potatoes (about 2 pounds)
2 tablespoons butter
3.5 ounces chipotles in adobo (1/2 a can - save the rest)
2-4 tablespoons crema or sour cream (depending on how creamy you want them)
1 tablespoon garlic powder
Salt and pepper to taste

Steps:

  • Peel and rinse the sweet potatoes, then chop them into small cubes.
  • Set them into a pot and cover them with water. Add a teaspoon of salt. Boil the sweet potatoes until they are fork tender, about 10 minutes. Drain.
  • Add the sweet potatoes to a large bowl and add the butter, chipotles in adobo, crema or sour cream, garlic powder, and salt and pepper to taste.
  • Mash the mixture with a potato masher or large fork to mash the potatoes, or use a hand mixer for smoother mashed potatoes.
  • Serve!

2 large sweet potatoes, peeled and cubed
1 3" stick cinnamon, preferably Mexican canela
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
1/4 cup crema Mexicana
1 chipotle pepper in adobo sauce, minced
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon ground pepper

Steps:

  • Place cubed potatoes and cinnamon stick in a 5-quart pot and cover with water. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat; cover and simmer for 15-20 minutes or until tender. Drain water and discard cinnamon stick and return to the pot.
  • Add butter, crema Mexicana, chipotle, salt, and pepper to potatoes and mash with potato masher. Serve warm.

2 large sweet potatoes, peeled and cubed
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
1 chipotle chile pepper in adobo sauce, finely chopped
2 teaspoons adobo sauce

Steps:

  • Put the sweet potatoes in a steamer basket and put the steamer in a large pot of simmering water that is 1 inch from the bottom of the basket. Cover and steam over medium-high heat for 20 minutes, or until the sweet potatoes are fork tender.
  • Remove the steamer basket, pour the water out of the pot and dump the sweet potatoes in the pot. Add the butter and salt and mash with a potato masher. Add the chile and sauce and continue mashing to combine. Serve immediately.

These chipotle pepper mashed sweet potatoes are a spiced alternative to regular mashed potatoes, and go deliciously with roast chicken, pork chops, and more.

4 pounds sweet potatoes
1 cup half and half
4 tablespoons butter
1 7 ounce can chipotle peppers (, chopped, plus 1 tablespoon adobo sauce)
2 tablespoons maple syrup
2 teaspoons kosher salt
zest of one orange

Steps:

  • First, cook the sweet potatoes one of two ways: 1) Roast on a baking sheet, whole with the skin on, in a 400°F oven for 50 minutes to 1 hour or until soft. Or, 2) Peel and quarter the sweet potatoes. Place the potatoes in a large saucepan, cover with water, and bring to a boil. Cook for 10-15 minutes, or until the potatoes are fork tender, and cooked through.
  • Meanwhile, in a small saucepan, warm the half and half, butter, and chipotle peppers plus adobo sauce over medium low to low heat, and cook for 5 minutes or until warmed through.
  • Transfer the potatoes to a mixing bowl, and mash with a hand-held mixer for 1 minute. Add the infused cream mixture, 2 tablespoons of maple syrup, salt, and orange zest. Mix until well-combined and creamy. Add more maple syrup and kosher salt to taste.
  • Serve with drizzle of remaining syrup if desired.

1 teaspoon adobo sauce from can of peppers
1/2 teaspoon salt

2 large potatoes, peeled and sliced
1 chipotle pepper, seeded, or more to taste
2 cloves garlic, minced
½ cup milk
1 small bunch fresh cilantro, chopped, or to taste
2 tablespoons butter, softened
½ teaspoon salt

Steps:

  • Bring water to a boil in a medium saucepan. Add potatoes and cook over medium heat, stirring once in a while, until easily pierced with a fork, 20 to 30 minutes. Drain.
  • Place chipotle pepper and garlic in a food processor; process until minced. Add potatoes and process until mostly smooth. Add milk, cilantro, butter, and salt. Mix until combined but a few lumps remain.
