Steps:
- Bring syrup and water to a boil in a 6 qt Dutch oven over medium-high heat.
- While the syrup/water is rising to a boil, whisk flour, baking powder, and salt in a bowl. Set aside.
- Grate butter on large holes of a box grater into flour and toss to coat. Add milk and stir with a fork until dough forms.
- When syrup mixture reaches a boil, use a spoon to drop large clumps of dough into syrup.
- Cover pot and simmer until dumplings are cooked through (10-15 minutes). Spoon dumplings and sauce into 6 bowls and serve.

'Grands-peres au sirop d'erable', or 'Grandfathers in maple syrup' are dessert dumplings that are cooked in maple syrup and are a French Canadian classic. Here is my grandmother's recipe. Dumplings can be served warm or cold.

- Combine flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt in a bowl. Rub in margarine until mixture is crumbly. Add milk and mix until a smooth dough forms.
- Combine maple syrup and water in a large saucepan over medium-high heat and bring to a boil. Scoop dough into dumplings using an ice cream scoop and drop gently into the boiling syrup. Reduce heat to low and simmer, keeping saucepan covered, until dumplings are cooked but not gooey and syrup has thickened, 10 to 15 minutes.

- Mix water and maple syrup in a saucepan. Bring to boil and let simmer at a very low heat. Meanwhile, prepare the dough:.
- Dough: In a bowl, put flour, baking powder and salt. Add butter and rub with your hands.
- Add the milk and stir.
- With a spoon, let drop dough by spoonful directly in the boiling syrup.
- Cover and let simmer at very low heat for 15 minutes (Do not remove the cover in the 15 minutes).

DUMPLINGS IN CANADIAN MAPLE SYRUP
A very Canadian recipe using Pure Canadian Maple Syrup #1 Light. Do not use imitation Maple Syrup. This recipe came from one of Canadas main producers/suppliers of Maple Syrup in Quebec Canada.

Steps:
- In a bowl, sift flour, measure and re-sift with baking powder and salt. Add shortening and mix well until shortening is fine. Add milk, blend. Dough will be quite firm.
- Heat 2 cups of maple syrup in a frying pan; bring to a boil over medium to high heat. Lower heat so that the syrup is not boiling and drop spoonfuls of dough into the syrup. Cover and poach for 12 to 15 minutes, making sure syrup is not boiling.
- Serve hot with remaining maple syrup.

BAKED FRUIT DUMPLINGS
A wonderful light dessert. Good with apples, pears, blueberries, raisins, nuts, and probably anything you think of. Serve with vanilla ice cream.

- Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Grease a 7x11 inch baking dish.
- In a large bowl, mix flour, baking powder, salt and brown sugar. Cut in butter. Pour in milk and stir to form a dough. Turn out onto a well-floured surface and roll out. Cut into 6 - 6 inch squares.
- Place a whole apple in the center of each square. Fill the core with blueberries. Drizzle with maple syrup. Pull up corners of dough and pinch edges together to seal. Place dumplings in prepared pan and sprinkle with cinnamon and nutmeg.
- Combine remaining maple syrup with enough water to pour over dumplings to a 1 inch depth in dish. Submerge remaining blueberries and apple peelings with dried orange peel in liquid.
- Bake in preheated oven 45 minutes, basting as necessary, until crisp and browned. Serve warm with sauce.
