We use this in the fall and push it in to the bark of the tree and then we rub bird seeds and fruits into it and the birds love it we have a couple ladder back hairy wood peckers that come around all the time for it.... we enjoy sitting in the back yard and watching them. we have gotten our camera out and taken pics of the birds...

1 c lard
1 c peanut butter, creamy
1 c all purpose flour
4 c yellow cornmeal

Steps:

  • 1. Mix and Serve This simple mix and serve treat attracts a lot of woodpeckers and other birds. Mix lard, peanut butter and flour. Then add cornmeal. Stir until it's the consistency of putty.
  • 2. Press the mixture into the bark of trees or on your pinecone feeders, etc....then press bird seed and fruit into the tree incase of pinecone or such roll in bird seed and or fruit.

I love using Bark Butter...and the birds love it too...You can add all kinds of goodies, even meal worms Enjoy watching the birds eat their treat!

Number Of Ingredients 7

1 large pine cone
1 large paper plate
1 butter knife
bark butter
birdseed
ribbon or yarn or twine
scissors

Steps:

  • 1. Cut a long length of yarn, twine, or ribbon to hang the bird feeder.
  • 2. Tie the ribbon in a knot around the pine cone near the top (about 3 sections down).
  • 3. Tie a knot in the end of the ribbon.
  • 4. Use the knife to get a large clump of bark butter on the paper plate.
  • 5. Use the knife to spread bark butter inside the pine cone and around the edges.
  • 6. Sprinkle the birdseed over the pine cone. Roll the pine cone in the birdseed that is on the plate. Hang the bird feeder on the tree.

I've tried some other concoctions and quite a few are very crumbly. I hate having half the stuff fall on the ground when I'm stuffing the holes in my feeder log. So I came up with this solution to make it a little stickier. Do use real lard, if possible. Our little town has it! Species that it's attracted so far: downy woodpecker, red-bellied woodpecker, black-capped chickadee, cardinal, house wren, robin, grackle, red-winged blackbird, catbirds...

Number Of Ingredients 4

1 1/2 cup(s) cornmeal
1/2 cup(s) oatmeal, quick or original
1/2 cup(s) lard
1/2 cup(s) peanut butter (chunky or smooth)

Steps:

  • 1. Mix together with large spoon or use a mixer. If the consistency seems too crumbly, add an extra tablespoon of lard.
  • 2. Store in a covered container either on counter top or you can store in refrigerator but let it warm up a bit before using.
