THREE-LAYER BEEF CASSEROLE

Three-Layer Beef Casserole image

A great, easy to make ground beef casserole, taken from Sunset's Potluck cookbook and slightly modified to our liking. Everyone I've made it for loves it. Easily fills a 9x12 casserole dish and will feed a large family or group.

Time 1h30m

Yield 6-8 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 10

2 1/2 lbs ground sirloin
3 garlic cloves, pressed
1 large brown onion, finely chopped
2 (15 ounce) cans tomato sauce
2 tablespoons dry basil
1 (10 ounce) package spinach fettuccine
1 (4 ounce) package sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese
1/2 cup sour cream
1/2 cup milk

Steps:

  • NOTE: Extra lean ground beef may be used in place of ground sirloin.
  • Crumble ground beef into a wide frying pan over medium heat, cooking and stirring until browned.
  • Discard all excess fat and stir in garlic, onion, tomato sauce, and basil.
  • Reduce heat, cover loosely, and simmer for 30 minutes.
  • Meanwhile, in a 6- to 8-quart pan, cook pasta according to package directions, until just tender to bite - do not overcook.
  • Spoon meat mixture into a 9x12 casserole dish.
  • Top evenly with pasta.
  • Sprinkle cheddar cheese over pasta.
  • In a bowl, mix together cream cheese, sour cream, and milk until smooth.
  • Pour over the pasta using a knife to seperate pasta so it can drizzle down inside. (At this point you may cover and refrigerate for one day).
  • Bake at 350 for 40-45 minutes. If refrigerated, bake up to one hour.

Hearty and filling with an added extra benefit of veggies hidden in the midst of kid-pleasing, yummy mashed potatoes, ground meat, and mounds of melted cheddar cheese! Great for get-togethers, pot-luck luncheons/ dinners, for sports crowds, or even for kids who are not big veggie-eaters! Nice for busy cooks who like easy-to-reheat leftovers that taste better the next day!

Spread drained ground beef mixture evenly on top of the biscuits. Spread diced tomatoes over the beef, then evenly scatter frozen vegetables. Spread mashed potatoes over the top, and sprinkle with remaining green onions, Cheddar cheese, and remaining parsley. Cover with foil.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 25 to 30 minutes. Remove foil and bake until cheese is golden and melted, another 5 minutes. Serve immediately.

This is a great casserole that I have been making for years, it's one of my family's favorite dishes. Feel free to adjust all ingredient amounts to suit taste. I usually season the ground beef/onion mixture with seasoned salt and add in some cayenne pepper for heat but that is optional.
