2 c sugar ( i personally only use 3/4 c) but this is what the original recipe calls for
1/2 gal water (8 cups)
3 family sized teabags (or 9 regular bags - i will also replace two with a herbal tea of choice)
3 c ice cold water

Steps:

  • 1. Pour the sugar into a large pitcher. Bring water to a boil in a large pan. When the water begins to boil, remove from the heat, and place the teabags in. Let steep for 5 to 6 minutes
  • 2. Remove tea bags, add the sugar and return tea to the heat. Bring just to a boil, then pour into the pitcher Fill the pitcher half way with ice, and stir until most of it melts. Then fill the pitcher the rest of the way with cold water, and stir until blended
  • 3. If I am not going to serve right away, I will pour in the additional three cups of water instead of the ice and put into the fridge. Ice will then be added as you serve it.

This sweet tea is found in houses, churches, and cafes all over the great state of Alabama. If you're north of the Mason-Dixon, you've NEVER had tea this good! Fresh-squeezed lemon, lime, or orange juice can be added for an extra flavor.
