LOTION FOR DRY SKIN

Lotion for Dry Skin image

I work in an office with 5 doctors and as you know, doctors are always washing their hands which makes them dry. We make this lotion for them and they LOVE IT!! **UPDATE 3/31/09: I use 4 oz. of Vaseline petroleum jelly, it would not let me enter it on the ingredients part and for the Vitamin E, you can use lotion or cream, whatever you like or can find. I also tried the NEW cucumber melon baby lotion....AWESOME!!, husband and son liked it but I still like the regular pink the best. I ONLY use J&J baby lotion because it seems to work the best. Thanks to everyone who has given me reviews....

COCONUT OIL HAND CREAM

Coconut Oil Hand Cream image

Recipe found on frugalgranola.com. "(Inspired by the Coconut Oil Hand Cream recipe in How to Make Your Own Organic Cosmetics by Gill Farrer-Halls). Great for extra dry skin. Nice to rub on after washing dishes or digging in the yard." You can use other essential oil scents of your choice: rose geranium, orange, ylang ylang, jasmine, vetiver, etc. I tried rose geranium and added only five drops of it. The original recipe specified fifteen drops of *each* essential oil. That had to be a typo. Try this on your cuticles or feet! Ahhhh!

Categories     Bath/Beauty

Time 10m

Yield 3 1/2 ounces

Number Of Ingredients 5

5 tablespoons coconut oil
1 1/2 tablespoons cold pressed sweet almond oil (I used Aura Cacia brand) or 1 1/2 tablespoons jojoba oil
1 -2 tablespoon grated beeswax (less for softer cream, more for firmer cream)
5 drops lemon essential oils (or other essential oil of your choosing)
5 drops lavender oil (")

Steps:

  • Fill the bottom of a double boiler with water and bring to the boil. In the top, combine the coconut oil, almond oil and beeswax. Allow to melt and stir to combine.
  • Remove pot from the burner and stir in the essential oils.
  • Pour into a heat proof container and allow to cool completely before closing.
  • My notes: Once the mixture cooled, I placed the container of hand cream in the fridge to become firmer. *Please* note the hand cream will melt if exposed to heat. I put a small amount in a sample container, placed it in my purse and an hour later the cream was liquified. It solidified again at room temperature. Why did this surprise me? ;).
  • Makes approximately 3 1/2 ounces.

BASIC COLD CREAM

Basic Cold Cream image

Excellent for dry skin! The combination of oil and wax provides a cleansing action when it comes in contact with your skin; dirt and oil on the skin surface are loosened and then can be gently wiped off with a soft tissue or cloth. Or it can be left on to soften and smooth skin and relieve dryness. From the book, Natural Beauty at Home.

Time 15m

Yield 8 oz

Number Of Ingredients 5

1/8 teaspoon borax (borax is a natural chemical substance found on alkaline lakeshores. Because it is a mild alkali it g)
1/4 cup mineral water
1/2 cup mineral oil (or use olive oil, which doesn't feel as heavy)
2 tablespoons grated beeswax
3 -5 drops lavender oil (optional) or 1 teaspoon rose water (optional also)

Steps:

  • Dissolve borax in water in a microwave safe cup.
  • Mix oil and beeswax in a microwave safe bowl and cook on med/high heat for several minutes, stirring every minute, until beeswax is melted.
  • (you can also heat in a double boiler till melted) Remove from heat or microwave.
  • When wax is melted bring the borax and water almost to boil in the microwave on high for about a minute.
  • Slowly add the borax to the oil, stirring briskly.
  • Add lavenderor rosewater, if using.
  • I like to add lavender because it helps to regenerate the skin, is a natural antibiotic, and has a calming effect.
  • Pour this cream into a container with a lid.
  • This mixture will last virtually forever.
  • To use, massage a small amount into your skin and then tissue off.
  • This mixture is white and fluffy and will thicken as it cools.
  • Note: For a lighter cream, put in in the blender after it has cooled and blend on high, adding 1 T water at a time.
  • If you end up with excess water do not worry- just strain it off your"fluffed up" cream.

DIY WHIPPED COCONUT OIL BODY BUTTER

DIY Whipped Coconut Oil Body Butter image

Found on livingthenourishedlife.com. You will need a stand up mixer or electric mixer and an wire whisk attachment to prepare this. DO NOT use a food processor or blender. If your coconut oil has turned to liquid, place it in the refrigerator until solid again. I used Heritage Store 'Aura Glow Almond Oil' (which by the way contains lanolin) and tried almond extract for the fragrance.

Categories     < 15 Mins

Time 10m

Yield 1 cups

Number Of Ingredients 3

1 cup organic virgin coconut oil (still solid)
1 teaspoon vitamin E (optional-read intro)
3 drops , your favorite essential oils for fragrance (optional)

Steps:

  • Place all ingredients into the mixing bowl. Note: Do not melt the coconut oil first. It will only whip up if it is solid.
  • Whip on high speed with a wire whisk for 6-7 minutes or until whipped into a light, airy consistency.
  • Spoon the whipped coconut oil body butter into a glass jar and cover tightly. Store at room temperature, or in the refrigerator if your house is so warm it melts the oil.
  • Note: You may notice tiny beads or "pearls" in the mixture. These will disappear almost immediately upon touching your warm skin.
