Number Of Ingredients 8

2 cups all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons sugar
4 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1/2 cup cold butter. cubed
1/2 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
3/4 cup buttermilk

Steps:

  • In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt and cayenne. Cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Add the cheese and toss. Stir in buttermilk just until moistened. , Turn onto a lightly floured surface; knead 8-10 times. Pat or roll to 1 in. thickness; cut with a floured 2-1/2-in. biscuit cutter. Place 1 in. apart in a large ungreased cast-iron or other ovenproof skillet. Bake at 425° until golden brown, 15-18 minutes. Serve warm.

2 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons sugar
1 teaspoon dill weed
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup cold butter, cubed
2/3 cup buttermilk
1/4 cup egg substitute
1/2 cup shredded reduced-fat cheddar cheese

Steps:

  • In a large bowl, combine the first six ingredients. Cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Combine buttermilk and egg substitute; stir into flour mixture just until moistened. Stir in cheese., Turn onto a lightly floured surface; knead 8-10 times. Pat to 3/4-in. thickness; cut with a floured 2-1/2-in. biscuit cutter. , Place 1 in. apart on an ungreased baking sheet. 1 tablespoon baking powder
1 pinch salt
1 ½ teaspoons white sugar
1 ½ teaspoons dried thyme
1 ½ teaspoons dried savory
1 teaspoon kelp powder
1 tablespoon dried parsley
1 tablespoon dried basil
⅓ cup unsalted butter, softened
¾ cup buttermilk

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 450 degrees F (230 degrees C). Whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, sugar, thyme, savory, kelp, parsley, and basil in a large bowl.
  • Cut in the butter with a knife or pastry blender until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Drizzle the buttermilk slowly over the flour mixture while tossing lightly with a fork, just until the flour mixture is moistened. Turn the dough out onto a floured board, and knead 4 to 5 times. Pat the dough into a circle, 3/4 inch thick, and cut biscuits with a 2 inch cookie cutter. Place biscuits 2 inches apart on a baking sheet.
  • Bake in the preheated oven until golden brown, about 8 minutes. Serve warm.

2 oz coarsely grated extra-sharp Cheddar (3/4 cup)
1 1/2 tablespoons chopped fresh dill
3/4 cup whole-milk plain yogurt
1/3 cup whole milk

Steps:

  • Put oven rack in middle position and preheat oven to 400°F.
  • Pulse flour, baking powder, sugar, baking soda, and salt in a food processor until combined. Add butter and pulse until mixture resembles coarse meal. Add Cheddar and dill and pulse until just combined. Whisk together yogurt and milk, then add to food processor and pulse until dough just comes together. Spoon 12 (1/4-cup) mounds of dough about 2 inches apart onto an ungreased large baking sheet and bake until puffed and pale golden, 12 to 15 minutes.

1 large egg
3 tablespoons minced fresh dill
2 1/2 cups unbleached all purpose flour
4 teaspoons baking powder
2 teaspoons sugar

1/2 cup solid vegetable shortening, chilled, cut into small pieces
7 tablespoons unsalted butter, chilled, cut into small pieces

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 400°F. Whisk buttermilk, egg and dill in small bowl to blend. Whisk flour and next 3 ingredients in large bowl to blend. Add shortening and butter to dry ingredients; cut in with fork until mixture resembles coarse meal. Add buttermilk mixture and stir just until moist dough forms.
  • Using floured hands, gently knead dough on well-floured work surface until dough just holds together. Pat out dough to 9x6-inch rectangle (about 3/4 inch thick). Cut dough into six 3-inch squares. Transfer squares to ungreased baking sheet, spacing 2 1/2 inches apart. (Can be prepared 8 hours ahead. Cover and refrigerate.)
  • Bake biscuits until puffed and golden brown, about 12 minutes.
