Time 15m

Yield 12 brooms

Number Of Ingredients 4

6 sticks string cheese
12 pretzel sticks
6 long or 12 short thin chives
1 to 2 tablespoons whole grain mustard

Steps:

  • Cut each piece of string cheese in half so you have 2 shorter sticks. Working one at a time, make 4 cuts vertically in one end of the cheese sticks, stopping about 3/4 inch from the top. Roll the cheese so the cuts are not parallel to the cutting board, and make 2 or 3 more cuts to form the bristles of the broom. Press a pretzel stick into the uncut end of the cheese stick to make the handle. Tie a chive in the middle of top (uncut) end of the cheese stick; this holds the broom head together. Repeat for the remaining brooms.
  • Spread the mustard haphazardly on the bottom of a black or white plate. Stand the brooms up on their bristles as if they are sweeping up the mustard.

Time 1h25m

Yield 18 to 20 cookies

Number Of Ingredients 7

390 grams (14 ounces) all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
225 grams (8 ounces) cold unsalted butter, cubed
200 grams (7 ounces) sugar
2 large eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla extract, optional
140 grams (5 ounces) blue hard candy, crushed
Edible silver luster dust, for decorating

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 302 degrees F/150 degrees C. Line 3 baking sheets with parchment.
  • Place the flour in a bowl or on top of a clean work surface. Add the butter and rub it through the flour until it resembles fine breadcrumbs. Make a well in the center and add the sugar, eggs and vanilla if using. Gently mix to form a dough. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
  • Dust a work surface with flour and roll the dough to about 1 centimeter (1/2 inch) thickness. Use a large star cutter to cut out stars. Place them on the prepared baking sheets. Use a smaller star cutter to cut the middle out of the large stars. Push an oven-safe lollipop stick through the bottom of a star. Repeat with the remaining stars. Fill the middles of the stars with crushed rock candy. Bake until the edges are golden brown, about 25 minutes. Allow to cool on the baking sheet until the candy has set hard.
  • Brush the cookies with edible silver luster dust for sparkle and shimmer.

Time 15m

Yield 12 broomsticks

Number Of Ingredients 3

12 string cheese sticks
12 pretzel rods
24 long chives

Steps:

  • Pull the strands apart from the string cheese sticks, going about three-quarters of the way up. Hold a string cheese at the solid end with your thumb and forefinger wrapped around it; insert a pretzel rod into the top of the cheese as you hold it firmly. Tie two long chives around the top of the cheese, about 1/4 inch down from where the pretzel and cheese meet. Snip away any excess chive. Arrange these cheesy appetizers on a serving tray with more savory snackables.
