The Mai Tai originated in California and was introduced to Hawaii in the 1940s, where orange and pineapple juices were added to create the Royal Hawaiian Mai Tai. This is Ree's favorite version of the famous drink.

Number Of Ingredients 10

6 ounces light rum
3 ounces dark rum
2 ounces lime juice
2 ounces orange liqueur
2 ounces almond syrup (like for coffee)
4 ounces orange juice
5 ounces pineapple juice
1/4 cup maraschino cherry juice, plus a few cherries for garnish
4 small wedges fresh pineapple, for garnish
Fresh mint leaves, for garnish

Steps:

  • Combine the rums, lime juice, orange liqueur, almond syrup, orange juice and pineapple juice in a mason jar and secure the lid. Shake well. Fill 4 rocks glasses with ice and pour over the mixture.
  • Add a splash of cherry juice to each glass. Garnish with the cherries, wedges of fresh pineapple and mint leaves.

TRADER VIC MAI TAI COCKTAIL



Trader Vic Mai Tai Cocktail image

California restaurateur Trader Vic is credited with invention of the mai tai. He served the rum and juice cocktail to friends visiting from Tahiti, who exclaimed, 'Maita'i roa ae!' The term translates to 'very good' and the name mai tai stuck.

1 cup crushed ice
2 fluid ounces 17-year old J. Wray Nephew Jamaican Rum
½ fluid ounce French Garnier Orgeat
½ fluid ounce orange Curacao liqueur
¼ fluid ounce rock candy syrup
1 lime, juiced
1 cup ice
1 sprig fresh mint

Steps:

  • Fill a rocks glass with 1 cup crushed ice. Set aside in the freezer.
  • Combine rum, orgeat, orange Curacao, rock candy syrup, and lime juice in a cocktail shaker. Add 1 cup ice, cover and shake until chilled. Strain into the chilled rocks glass.
  • Garnish with half of the lime shell inside the drink and float a sprig of fresh mint on the edge of the glass.

The perfect Spring or Summer drink. Tried and tested for over 12 years now. and always a crowd favorite! This recipe yields one gallon!! Use a 1 gallon sun tea jar for serving!

2 cups light rum
1 cup dark rum
1 cup 151 proof rum
1 cup orange curacao (orange flavored liqueur)
1 cup almond flavored syrup
1 cup simple syrup
10 limes, juiced
½ gallon fresh orange juice

Steps:

  • In a large jar or drink cooler, combine the light rum, dark rum, 151 rum, orange liqueur, almond syrup, simple syrup, and lime juice. Stir and top off with orange juice. Do not use grenadine if you want the true Mai Tai! Serve in 8 to 12 ounce glasses with ice.
