I'm a busy PTA and pom-pom mom, so I'm always looking for fast and easy recipes. These savory slices of jazzed-up French bread are great with soup and salad. My 16-year-old daughter and her friends like to snack on them instead of pizza. -Shirley Mills, Tulsa, Oklahoma

Number Of Ingredients 6

1 loaf (1 pound) French bread (20 inches)
2/3 cup butter, softened
1/3 cup chopped green onions
4 teaspoons prepared mustard
5 slices process Swiss cheese
5 bacon strips

Steps:

  • Cut bread into 1-in.-thick slices, leaving slices attached at bottom. In a bowl, combine the butter, onions and mustard; spread on both sides of each slice of bread. Cut each cheese slice diagonally into four triangles; place between the slices of bread. Cut bacon in half widthwise and then lengthwise; drape a piece over each slice. , Place the loaf on a double thickness of heavy-duty foil. Bake at 400° for 20-25 minutes or until bacon is crisp.

This makes a good game day snack or a light lunch served with fruit or a salad but my favorite way to serve is for breakfast, it's full of flavor.

Number Of Ingredients 9

1 large loaf crusty french bread
8-12 slice swiss cheese
8-12 slice canadian bacon
3 Tbsp grated onion
2 tsp dijon mustard
3 tsp lemon juice
2 tsp poppy seeds
1 tsp beau monde seasoning
4 Tbsp butter

Steps:

  • 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Prepare a baking sheet with aluminum foil. Slice Bread into about 1 inch sections without slicing through the bottom, keep that intact.
  • 2. Melt butter and combine all ingredients except for the cheese and bacon.
  • 3. Cut swiss cheese and canadian bacon into halves.
  • 4. Using a pastry brush, brush melted butter mixture onto/or into both sides of sliced bread sections. Insert 1 piece of swiss cheese and 1 piece of bacon in each groove. Any leftover butter mixture can be brushed on the top of the bread.
  • 5. Place loaf onto prepared baking sheet and bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes or until cheese is melted and somewhat bubbly.
  • 6. When removed from the oven you may pull it apart or finish slicing through to the bottom of the bread on a cutting board.
