Number Of Ingredients 11

1 12-oz. / 340-g block extra firm tofu
Salt
2 tablespoons soy sauce (or tamari for gluten-free option)
1/2 tablespoon sugar
1/4 cup water
1 teaspoon cornstarch
2 teaspoons vegetable oil
4 garlic cloves (minced)
1 green onion (chopped (*Footnote 1))
Optional Toasted sesame seeds for garnish
Optional Sriracha sauce for serving

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F (200 C). Line a baking tray with parchment.
  • Press the water out of the tofu while heating up the oven. Carefully press the tofu with your hands. Slice the tofu into two even-thickness pieces. Wrap a few layers of cheesecloth (or kitchen paper towel) outside the tofu, and place a small tray with a heavy weight on top. The weight can be a jar of pickles or canned tomatoes.
  • When the oven is heated, cut the tofu into 1/2-inch (1-cm) pieces. (*Footnote 2)
  • Season both sides with salt. Bake for about 30 minutes, until the tofu turns golden and the surface puffs.
  • Now you can use it in stir fries or serve the tofu with sauce.
  • Prepare the garlic sauce while baking the tofu. Whisk the soy sauce, sugar, water, and cornstarch in a small bowl until completely dissolved.
  • Heat the oil in a small pan over a medium heat until hot. Add the garlic and green onions. Stir for 20 seconds to release the aroma.
  • Stir the sauce again to make sure the cornstarch is dissolved. Pour into the pan. Stir constantly for 10 to 20 seconds, until the sauce has thickened enough to coat the back of a spoon. Transfer immediately into a small bowl, so the sauce won't overcook in the residual heat.
  • When the tofu is baked, drizzle the sauce over the tofu. Garnish with green onions and sesame seeds, if using.
  • Serve immediately as a snack or appetizer.

ASIAN-STYLE GARLIC TOFU

Asian-Style Garlic Tofu image

Tofu marinated in a garlic sauce that's packed with savory flavor! Easy to make and perfect with a side of rice & steamed veggies.

Provided by Kaitlin - The Garden Grazer

Categories     Main Dish

Time 1h

Number Of Ingredients 8

14 oz. extra-firm tofu
4 green onions
1 Tbsp. toasted sesame oil
Optional for serving: cooked brown rice, quinoa, noodles, sesame seeds for topping
1/4 cup hoisin sauce (see notes for gluten-free)
2 Tbsp. tamari (or soy sauce)
2-3 cloves garlic
Optional: freshly grated ginger

Steps:

  • Remove excess moisture from the tofu by gently pressing it between towels. Then cut it into bite-sized cubes. (I cut mine about 3/4-inch.) Set aside.
  • Make the sauce: Mince garlic. Then in a shallow pan (I use an 8"x8" glass baking dish) add the three ingredients for the garlic sauce. Stir to combine.
  • Add tofu cubes to the sauce and gently toss until thoroughly coated. (*Optional: if you have time, cover and refrigerate to marinate for at least 30 minutes or a few hours.)
  • When ready, cook the tofu: In a large skillet, heat sesame oil over medium heat.
  • Once oil is hot, carefully add the marinated tofu (with any remaining sauce). Spread out the cubes in a single layer. Simmer and cook without stirring for 5-7 minutes or until lightly seared on one side. Flip, and cook for another 3-4 minutes.
  • Meanwhile, slice green onions and add to the pan during the last 1-2 minutes of cooking. (Sometimes I add a little more hoisin or tamari if the pan becomes dry. The sauce should almost completely absorb into the tofu however.)
  • Great served warm over brown rice (and garnished with sesame seeds or more green onions if desired).

Asians have a special place in their hearts for tofu. You might not be aware but the origin of tofu is from Asia. Tofu or bean curd is a versatile and nutrient-dense ingredient that can be used in a variety of ways to prepare delectable dishes. One of the most popular tofu-based dishes is Asian garlic tofu. It’s not only delicious but it’s also healthy. The dish goes well with steamed rice and a variety of vegetables. In this article, we’ll share some valuable tips for making Asian garlic tofu recipes that will leave your mouth watering.

Choosing the right type of tofu

Choosing the right type of tofu for your Asian garlic tofu recipe is crucial. Tofu comes in different varieties like extra firm, firm, medium, and soft. When it comes to Asian garlic tofu dishes, it’s important to choose a firm or extra firm tofu. This is because firm tofu can hold its shape well during cooking and doesn’t crumble easily. Extra firm tofu is even better because it has a chewy texture that’s perfect for stir-frying. Soft or medium tofu is not recommended for this recipe because it’s too tender and can easily turn to mush when cooked.

Marinating the tofu

Marinating is an essential process when it comes to Asian garlic tofu recipes. It’s the key to adding flavor to the tofu. The longer your tofu marinates, the more flavorful it becomes. To prepare the marinade, combine soy sauce, rice vinegar, sugar, sesame oil, and cornstarch in a bowl. Mix well and then add the diced tofu to the mixture. Make sure the tofu is coated with the marinade. Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes or up to 2 hours. This allows the flavors to penetrate the tofu.

Cooking the tofu

Once you’ve marinated the tofu, it’s time to cook it. The best way to cook tofu for Asian garlic tofu recipes is to stir-fry. Heat a wok or non-stick pan over high heat. Add some oil and wait until it’s hot. Add the marinated tofu and stir-fry for about 5 minutes or until the tofu turns golden brown. Make sure you don’t overcrowd the wok or pan. Stir-fry in batches if necessary. Remove the tofu from the wok or pan and set aside.

Preparing the garlic sauce

To add more flavor to the dish, you need to prepare the garlic sauce. In a small bowl, combine minced garlic, soy sauce, hoisin sauce, sugar, chili flakes, and water. Stir well and set aside.

Stir-frying the vegetables

Stir-frying the vegetables is the next step. You can use any vegetables of your choice such as broccoli, bell peppers, mushrooms, snow peas, etc. Heat some oil in the same wok or pan over high heat. Add the vegetables and stir-fry for about 5-7 minutes or until they’re cooked but still a bit crunchy. Make sure you don’t overcook them.

Combining the ingredients

Finally, it’s time to combine all the ingredients. Add the stir-fried tofu back into the wok or pan with the vegetables. Mix everything together. Add the garlic sauce and toss until everything is coated. Stir-fry for another minute or two. Make sure the sauce is evenly distributed. Garnish with some sliced scallions and sesame seeds.

Conclusion

In conclusion, making Asian garlic tofu recipes is easy and can be a delightful addition to your weekly meal plan. Make sure you choose the right type of tofu and give it enough time to marinate. Stir-fry the tofu and vegetables separately to avoid overcrowding the wok or pan. Finally, don’t forget to add the garlic sauce for a burst of flavor. With these tips in mind, you’re sure to impress your family or guests with your delectable Asian garlic tofu dish.
