- 3. In a mixing cup with a small fork or small whisk, measure oil, vinegar, sugar, and soup/seasoning packet and combine.
- 4. COMBINE INGREDIENTS: Place coleslaw mix into bowl, mix in nuts/seeds, green onions and broken ramen noodles. Pour dressing over and refrigerate 30 minutes before serving.

As an Asian cuisine enthusiast, you may have tried different kinds of dishes. However, if you are yet to try Asian coleslaw, then you are missing a lot. This recipe is simple to make, has a variety of flavors, and is perfect for any occasion. Whether you are hosting a party or preparing a family meal, Asian coleslaw is an ideal dish to serve. In this article, we will provide you with valuable tips to make the best Asian coleslaw without necessarily following a recipe.
Tip 1: Choose the right vegetables
The first step to making perfect Asian coleslaw is choosing the right vegetables. As opposed to western coleslaw, which mainly contains cabbage, Asian coleslaw combines a mixture of vegetables. You can use shredded carrots, cabbage, bell peppers, cucumbers, and greens like kale or bok choy. The different vegetables add an array of colors, textures, and flavors to the recipe. By incorporating different kinds of vegetables, you create a balance between the sweetness, spiciness, and acid of the coleslaw.
Tip 2: Use the right dressing
The flavor of Asian coleslaw largely depends on the dressing; therefore, it is essential to use the right one. For example, you can make a dressing using hoisin sauce, salt, pepper, vinegar, honey, and sesame oil to balance the sweetness, saltiness, and tanginess of the vegetables. Additionally, you can use peanut butter, soy sauce, and lime juice, among other ingredients to make the dressing. The dressing should not overpower the flavors of the vegetables, but instead, should complement them.
Tip 3: Add protein
Adding protein to Asian coleslaw can make it a complete and filling meal. Some of the proteins that you can add include chicken, shrimp, tofu, or edamame. Additionally, you can throw in some nuts or seeds like sesame seeds, almonds or cashews. The protein adds texture, flavor, and nutrition making the coleslaw a meal on its own.
Tip 4: Add herbs
The addition of herbs like cilantro, mint, green onions or Thai basil adds some freshness and an authentic Asian flavor to the coleslaw. Herbs also make the coleslaw look more appealing while enhancing the aroma of the dish. Combine the herbs with the dressing before adding to the vegetables to ensure the flavor is evenly distributed.
Tip 5: Incorporate a spicy element
Asian cuisine is known for its spiciness. Therefore, to make your coleslaw more authentic and flavorful, adding a spicy element is essential. You can use sriracha, chili paste, red pepper flakes, or jalapenos to add spice to the dish. The spicy element should not be too much, but just enough to add some heat and flavor without overwhelming the taste buds.
Tip 6: Balance the flavors
It is essential to balance the flavors of the coleslaw. The ratio of tanginess, sweetness, saltiness, and spiciness should be perfect to create a well-rounded and delicious dish. To achieve balance, taste the dressing before adding it to the vegetables, and adjust any flavors that may be overpowering or missing. Additionally, add salt and pepper sparingly to avoid making the coleslaw too salty or peppery.
Tip 7: Let it sit
Letting the coleslaw sit for a while after making it allows the flavors to meld and marinate. After preparing the coleslaw, refrigerate it for about an hour before serving. This is because the flavors develop over time and the vegetables become more tender. Additionally, letting the coleslaw sit allows the dressing to coat the vegetables evenly, giving the dish a more consistent flavor.
Conclusion
In conclusion, making Asian coleslaw is easy, and you do not need an exact recipe to create a delicious bowl of the dish. The essential thing is to choose the right vegetables, use the right dressing, incorporate protein, add herbs, add a spicy element, balance the flavors, and let the coleslaw sit. These tips will help you create a well-balanced, flavorful, and appetizing coleslaw, which can be served as a side dish or a meal on its own. With these tips, you are on your way to creating the best Asian coleslaw recipe that will leave your guests impressed.
