These chicken tenders have a barbecue base but are elevated with a decidedly Asian influence. I use Savory Spice® Asian Delight BBQ Rub, which is different from Chinese five-spice.

ASIAN-INSPIRED BBQ CHICKEN

Asian-Inspired BBQ Chicken image

Think of this dish as Chicken Teriyaki with a South Asian flair, or India meets the other flavors of Asia.

Provided by Jennifer Segal

Categories     Dinner

Time 30m

Yield 4

Number Of Ingredients 11

¼ cup plus 2 tablespoons dark brown sugar, packed
¼ cup plus 2 tablespoons soy sauce
3 tablespoons fresh lime juice, from 2-3 limes
1½ tablespoons vegetable oil
½ teaspoon Asian sesame oil
¾ teaspoon Garam Masala (substitute curry powder if you can't find it)
3 cloves garlic, minced
1½ teaspoons fresh grated ginger
½ teaspoon cayenne pepper (use less if you don't like heat)
8 skinless, boneless chicken thighs
2 scallions light and dark green parts only, thinly sliced

Steps:

  • In a medium bowl, mix together all of the ingredients except for the chicken and scallions. Set ¼ cup of the marinade aside and cover (you'll use this later for the sauce), then place the rest in a zip-lock freezer bag with the chicken thighs. Be sure the chicken is evenly coated with the marinade, then place the bag in the refrigerator (in a bowl in case of leakage); let marinate for 3-4 hours.
  • Preheat grill to high heat.
  • Grease the grill. (Lightly dip a wad of paper towels in vegetable oil; then, using tongs, carefully rub the towels over the grates several times until glossy and coated.) Place the chicken on the grill; cover and cook 3-5 minutes on each side, or until nicely browned and done. Transfer the chicken to a serving platter, then top with the reserved marinade and sliced scallions.

In this article, we will share some valuable tips for making the best Asian baked BBQ chicken recipes. Tip 1: Choose the Right Chicken When making Asian baked BBQ chicken, it is important to choose the right cut of chicken. Boneless, skinless chicken breasts or thighs work well for this recipe because they are easy to handle and cook quickly. Additionally, removing the skin and bones can help reduce the fat content of the dish. Tip 2: Marinate the Chicken Marinating the chicken is the secret to getting the rich, flavorful taste of Asian baked BBQ chicken. The marinade is usually a mixture of soy sauce, honey, garlic, ginger, and other spices. It is important to marinate the chicken for at least 2 hours to give the flavors enough time to develop. Tip 3: Use a Baking Dish When baking Asian BBQ chicken, it is important to use a baking dish that is large enough to hold all the pieces without overcrowding. This will help ensure that the chicken cooks evenly and is fully cooked throughout. A large baking dish also makes cleanup easier and reduces the risk of spills. Tip 4: Preheat the Oven Before baking your Asian BBQ chicken, it is important to preheat the oven to the correct temperature. This will help ensure that the chicken cooks evenly and is fully cooked throughout. A preheated oven will also help prevent the chicken from becoming tough and dry. Tip 5: Brush with BBQ Sauce To get the classic Asian BBQ chicken taste, it is important to brush the chicken with the sauce while it is baking. This will help infuse the chicken with the sweet, spicy flavor of the BBQ sauce and give it a beautiful glaze. Be sure to brush the chicken with the sauce every 10-15 minutes to keep it moist and flavorful. Tip 6: Monitor the Temperature When baking Asian BBQ chicken, it is important to monitor the internal temperature of the chicken to ensure that it is fully cooked. The USDA recommends cooking chicken to an internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit. You can use a meat thermometer to check the temperature of the chicken and ensure that it is safe to eat. Tip 7: Let it Rest After baking your Asian BBQ chicken, it is important to let it rest for a few minutes before serving. This will help the juices redistribute throughout the meat and make the chicken more tender and juicy. Cover the chicken with foil and let it rest for about 5 minutes before slicing and serving. Tip 8: Garnish with Fresh Herbs To give your Asian BBQ chicken some extra flavor and color, garnish it with fresh herbs like cilantro or green onions. These herbs not only add flavor but also a pop of green that makes the dish look more appetizing. You can also add some sesame seeds or chopped peanuts for an extra crunch. Tip 9: Serve with Sides Asian BBQ chicken is a great main dish, but it is even better when served with some delicious sides.
