Armenian shish kebab is an incredibly delicious and satisfying meal that is loved by millions of people around the world. Although it may seem like a simple concept, there are several things to keep in mind when making shish kebab to ensure that it is perfect every time. Here are some valuable tips to help you make the perfect Armenian shish kebab recipe:
1. Choose the Right Meat
The first and most important step to making a great Armenian shish kebab is to choose the right meat. The best cuts of meat for shish kebab are lamb, beef or chicken. These meats are loaded with flavor and have the perfect texture for shish kebab. If possible, try to choose meat from grass-fed animals, as it is healthier and has more flavor.
2. Cut the Meat Properly
The way the meat is cut is also important when making shish kebab. The meat should be cut into small cubes, about the size of a golf ball. This size is perfect for grilling and ensures that the meat will cook evenly. It’s also important to remove any excess fat or gristle as it can cause flare-ups on the grill, which can burn the meat and ruin the flavor.
3. Marinate the Meat
Marinating the meat is a crucial step in making Armenian shish kebab. A good marinade will not only add flavor but will also tenderize the meat, making it even more delicious. The marinade can be made using a variety of ingredients such as garlic, onion, lemon juice, olive oil, and various spices. It’s best to marinate the meat for at least six hours, but overnight is even better.
4. Soak the Skewers
When using wooden skewers for the shish kebab, it’s important to soak them in water for at least 30 minutes prior to grilling. This prevents the skewers from catching on fire on the grill and ensures that the meat will not fall off the skewers while cooking. Alternatively, you can use metal skewers, which do not require soaking.
5. Preheat the Grill
To ensure that the shish kebab cooks evenly, it’s important to preheat the grill to a high temperature before placing the meat on the grill. This will create a nice sear on the meat and help to lock in the juices, creating a delicious, juicy shish kebab. It’s also a good idea to brush the grill grates with oil to prevent sticking.
6. Keep the Meat Moving
While grilling the shish kebab, it’s important to keep the meat moving on the grill to ensure that it cooks evenly. You can use a spatula to gently move the skewers around, ensuring that all sides of the meat are exposed to the heat. This will prevent the meat from burning on one side and being undercooked on the other.
7. Don’t Overcook the Meat
One of the biggest mistakes that people make when making shish kebab is overcooking the meat. Overcooked meat can be tough and dry, ruining the flavor and texture of the shish kebab. It’s important to remove the meat from the grill as soon as it’s cooked through but still juicy and tender.
8. Rest the Meat
After the shish kebab is removed from the grill, it’s important to let it rest for a few minutes before serving. This allows the juices to redistribute throughout the meat, ensuring that it is juicy and tender. If you cut into the shish kebab immediately after grilling, all of the juices will escape, leaving the meat dry and tough.
9. Add Some Vegetables
While the meat is the star of the show when it comes to shish kebab, adding some vegetables to the skewers can add even more flavor and nutrition. Some great vegetables to use include bell peppers, onions, mushrooms, and tomatoes. These vegetables will not only add flavor but will also provide some important vitamins and minerals.
10. Serve with Pita and Tzatziki
To complete your Armenian shish kebab meal, serve it with some warm pita bread and tzatziki sauce. The bread can be used to wrap the shish kebab and the tzatziki sauce adds a cool, tangy flavor that complements the spices in the shish kebab. This is a classic combination that will make your meal complete.
In conclusion, making the perfect Armenian shish kebab recipe requires some attention to detail, but with these valuable tips, you are sure to impress your family and friends with your grilling skills. From choosing the right meat to preparing the skewers to grilling the meat to perfection, these tips will help you make the ultimate shish kebab every time.
