1 large egg
1 cup raisins
1 cup black walnuts ((or English walnuts))
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon cloves
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
1 teaspoon cinnamon

Steps:

  • Grease a 10 cup bundt cake pan generously with shortening, then dust with flour (or use our perfect cake release). Preheat the oven to 350º Fahrenheit.

The History of Applesauce Bundt Cake

There is not much information about the history of the applesauce bundt cake; however, it is believed to have been created during the 1950s when the bundt pan was first introduced to the US. The bundt pan is a unique baking pan with fluted sides and a hollow center, which provides a perfect space for a bundt cake recipe. The bundt pan was originally used to make the German Kugelhupf, a sweet yeast cake. However, over time, people discovered that the pan could be used to make other types of cakes, including applesauce bundt cake. This cake quickly became popular due to its simplicity, moist texture, and the use of applesauce in the recipe.

The Recipe

The ingredients for the applesauce bundt cake recipe are simple and can be easily found in any grocery store. The recipe includes:
Dry ingredients:
- 3 cups all-purpose flour - 1 teaspoon baking soda - 1 teaspoon salt - 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon - ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
Wet ingredients:
- 1 cup unsalted butter, room temperature - 1 ½ cups granulated sugar - 3 large eggs - 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract - 2 cups unsweetened applesauce
Instructions:
1. Preheat oven to 350°F. 2. Grease a 10-12 cup bundt pan with butter or cooking spray. 3. In a medium bowl, combine the dry ingredients (flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg) and whisk them together. 4. In a large bowl, beat the butter and sugar together with an electric mixer until light and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract. 5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Stir in the applesauce until it is evenly distributed throughout the batter. 6. Pour the batter into the prepared bundt pan and smooth it out with a spatula. 7. Bake for 55-60 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean. 8. Remove from the oven and let the cake cool in the pan for 10-15 minutes. 9. Invert the cake onto a wire rack and let it cool completely before glazing or dusting with powdered sugar.

Tips and Variations

- For a more spiced flavor, add ½ teaspoon ground cloves to the dry ingredients. - For a more nutty flavor, add 1 cup of chopped walnuts, pecans, or hazelnuts to the batter before pouring it into the bundt pan. - For a healthier version, replace the butter with 1 cup of unsweetened applesauce and reduce the sugar to 1 cup. - Instead of glazing the cake, you can dust it with powdered sugar, or serve it with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream. - This cake can be made ahead of time and stored at room temperature for up to 3-4 days or in the refrigerator for up to a week.

Applesauce bundt cake is a delicious and easy-to-make dessert that can be served year-round. The sweet and moist texture of the cake is perfect for any occasion. Whether you are a seasoned baker or a newbie in the kitchen, these valuable tips will help you create the perfect applesauce bundt cake.

Tip 1: Use the Right Ingredients

To make the best applesauce bundt cake, you should use quality ingredients. Start by using fresh, unsweetened applesauce. Adding sugar to the applesauce can make the cake too sweet. You should also use high-quality flour, baking powder, and vanilla extract. Don't forget to use eggs that are at room temperature, as this will help ensure that the cake rises properly.
1.1 Fresh, Unsweetened Applesauce
Fresh applesauce is best to use because it contains no added sugar. This will give the cake a more natural flavor, and you can control how sweet you want the cake to be by adding extra sugar.
1.2 High-Quality Flour
The quality of the flour used in the batter can impact the texture of the cake. Make sure to use good quality all-purpose flour that is free of lumps and clumps. You can also use cake flour to create a more delicate and tender cake.
1.3 Baking Powder
Check the baking powder that is used in the cake recipe to ensure it is still fresh. Old baking powder can affect the rise of the cake.
1.4 Vanilla Extract
Use a high-quality vanilla extract, which will give the applesauce bundt cake a rich and aromatic flavor.
1.5 Room Temperature Eggs
When you are baking with eggs, it is best to make sure that they are at room temperature before use. This will help them to mix better with the other ingredients and create a lighter texture in the cake.

Tip 2: Don’t Overmix the Batter

One common mistake that many bakers make when making applesauce bundt cake is overmixing the batter. Overmixing can cause the cake to become tough and dense, which is not what you want. Once you have added the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, you should only mix them until they are just combined.
2.1 Sift the Flour
Sifting the flour helps to remove any lumps, which means that it will be easier to mix the ingredients together. The more air that the flour gets as it's sifted, the lighter and fluffier your cake will be.
2.2 Alternate adding the dry and wet ingredients
Alternate adding the dry ingredients and the wet ingredients, which will help prevent overmixing the batter. This means that you should add some of the flour mixture, then some of the wet ingredients, and repeat the process until everything has been combined.
2.3 Mix on Low Speed
Mix the batter on low speed, which will prevent overmixing. Overmixing can cause the cake to become tough and dense, and the applesauce bundt cake requires a delicate touch.

Tip 3: Prepare the Bundt Pan Properly

Preparing the bundt pan correctly is essential to ensure that the cake comes out of the pan in one piece. There are a few things that you should keep in mind when preparing the pan.
3.1 Grease the Pan with Butter or Shortening
Grease the bundt pan generously with butter or shortening, making sure to cover every crevice. Ensure that the corners of the pan and the center tube are well greased to prevent sticking.
3.2 Flour the Pan
After greasing the pan, add some flour and coat it well. This will create a barrier between the pan and the cake, which will help prevent it from sticking.
3.3 Don't Overfill the Pan
You should never fill the bundt pan more than three-quarters full, as this can cause the cake to overflow and not bake evenly. Leave room for the cake to rise and expand without spilling over.

Tip 4: Bake the Cake at the Right Temperature

The temperature at which you bake the cake is crucial to getting the desired texture and flavor. The applesauce bundt cake should be baked at a moderate temperature for a longer time. Do not be tempted to increase the temperature to bake the cake faster, as this may affect the texture and flavor.
4.1 Preheat the Oven
Preheat the oven to the recommended temperature before you start mixing the ingredients. If you put the cake into an unheated oven, it will affect the rise of the cake.
4.2 Check the Cake Frequently
The cake should be checked frequently towards the end of the baking time to prevent it from drying out. To check if the cake is ready, insert a toothpick or cake tester into the center of the cake. If it comes out clean, then the cake is done. If the toothpick comes out with some batter on it, continue baking the cake for a few more minutes.

Tip 5: Let the Cake Cool Completely Before Serving

After the cake is done baking, let it cool in the pan for at least 10 minutes before removing it. If you remove the cake too soon, it is likely to fall apart, and you risk ruining all your hard work.
5.1 Invert the Cake
To remove the cake from the pan, invert it onto a plate or a cake stand. Gently tap the bottom of the pan to help release the cake. If the cake is still stuck, try running a knife around the edges of the pan.
5.2 Let it Cool Completely
Before serving the cake, let it cool completely to room temperature. Hot cake can be crumbly and difficult to slice. Allowing the cake to cool will make it easier to cut and serve.

Conclusion

By following these valuable tips, you can create a delicious and moist applesauce bundt cake that will delight your family and friends. Remember, the key is to use fresh, high-quality ingredients and not to overmix the batter. With a little patience and attention to detail, you can create a masterpiece that everyone will enjoy.
