Time 1h

Yield 6

Number Of Ingredients 7

1 (8 ounce) package wide egg noodles
1 ½ pounds sweet Italian sausage, sliced
¾ cup white sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
2 tablespoons butter, melted
4 apples - peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
2 tablespoons butter, cut into pieces

Steps:

  • Preheat an oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  • Fill a large pot with lightly salted water and bring to a rolling boil over high heat. Once the water is boiling, stir in the egg noodles, and return to a boil. Cook the pasta uncovered, stirring occasionally, until the pasta has cooked through, but is still firm to the bite, about 5 minutes. Drain well in a colander set in the sink.
  • Place a large skillet over medium-high heat; cook the sausages until completely cooked, 5 to 7 minutes.
  • Stir together the sugar and cinnamon in a small bowl.
  • Pour the melted butter into the bottom of a 9x13 inch baking dish; layer half of the cooked egg noodles into the bottom of the dish; top with half of the sausage slices and half of the apple slices; sprinkle about half of the cinnamon-sugar mix over the dish. Repeat layers with remaining noodles, sausage, apples, and cinnamon-sugar. Dot with the butter pieces.
  • Bake in the preheated oven until the apples are soft, 30 to 45 minutes.

Apples can add a sweet and tangy flavor while noodles provide a comforting and hearty base. Whether you are looking for a savory or sweet dish, here are some valuable tips to consider when making apples and noodles recipes.

Tips for Savory Apple and Noodle Dishes

1. Play with Texture

When making a savory apple and noodle dish, it is important to pay attention to texture. Apples can add a crunchy texture while noodles can be soft and chewy. For a balanced dish, consider adding other textural elements like roasted nuts, sautéed vegetables, or crispy bacon.

2. Balance Sweet and Salty Flavors

Apples can add a sweetness to a dish which can pair well with salty flavors like soy sauce, miso, or Parmesan cheese. When using apples in a savory noodle dish, make sure to balance the sweet and salty flavors for a satisfying flavor profile.

3. Experiment with Different Noodle Types

When it comes to noodles, there are seemingly endless options to choose from. For a savory apple and noodle dish, try using thicker noodles like udon or soba which can hold up to heavier sauces. Alternatively, thinner noodles like vermicelli or angel hair can be used for a lighter dish.

4. Consider Spices and Seasonings

To add depth of flavor to a savory apple and noodle dish, experiment with your favorite spices and seasonings. Spices like ginger, garlic, and cumin can add warmth while herbs like parsley, thyme, and rosemary can add freshness.

5. Use Apples as a Replacement for Meat

Incorporating apples into a savory noodle dish can help create a vegetarian or vegan meal. Apples can add a meaty texture and flavor to a dish without the use of animal protein. For example, try cooking diced apples with mushrooms and soy sauce to create a hearty topping for your noodles.

Tips for Sweet Apple and Noodle Dishes

1. Play with Different Apple Varieties

One of the benefits of using apples in a sweet noodle dish is the versatility of apple varieties. From tart Granny Smith to sweet Honeycrisp, each type of apple can add a unique flavor to your dish. Experiment with different apple varieties to create a flavor profile that works for you.

2. Use Different Types of Noodles

When making a sweet apple and noodle dish, try incorporating different types of noodles. Egg noodles can add a comforting texture while rice noodles can provide a chewy base. Additionally, fruit-infused noodles like mango or pumpkin can add a sweet twist to your dish.

3. Experiment with Spices and Sweeteners

Spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, and cardamom can add a warm and cozy flavor to a sweet apple and noodle dish. Additionally, sweeteners like honey, maple syrup, and brown sugar can enhance the natural sweetness of the apples. When experimenting with spices and sweeteners, start with a small amount and adjust to taste.

4. Consider Adding Creamy Elements

Adding a creamy element like cream cheese, mascarpone, or whipped cream can help balance the sweet flavors of a sweet apple and noodle dish. These creamy elements can also add a rich and luxurious texture to the dish.

5. Add Crunchy Toppings

For added texture and flavor, consider adding crunchy toppings to your sweet apple and noodle dish. Toasted nuts like almonds, pecans, or walnuts can add a nutty flavor while granola can add a satisfying crunch.

Conclusion

Whether you are making a savory or sweet dish, apples and noodles provide a unique and delicious combination. To get the most out of this pairing, experiment with different apple varieties, noodle types, spices, and textures. With these valuable tips in mind, you can create a variety of dishes that will satisfy your taste buds and provide a hearty and comforting meal.
