SUMMER APPLE SLAW

Summer Apple Slaw image

From Southern Living May 2009 "Summer Living" Special Section, this is a nice combination of red and green fruits and veggies. Great as a side for bar-b-ques. You could probably use the short-cut of buying prepared slaw mix with the cabbages already shredded and ready to use - could even include matchstick carrots. NOTE: Prep time includes 1 hour chill time.

Apple Summer Slaw: Valuable Tips to Keep in Mind

Summertime is the perfect season to experiment with fresh ingredients that offer a refreshing zing on the palate. When it comes to salads, nothing beats the versatility and deliciousness of slaws. A particular slaw variation that's perfect for the summer season is the Apple Summer Slaw. This dish is a dynamic combination of crunchy textures, tangy flavors, and fruity sweetness that can complement any meal or be enjoyed as a standalone dish. Below are valuable tips you should keep in mind when making Apple Summer Slaw.
Choose the Right Apples
The type of apples you use in your Apple Summer Slaw can make a world of difference in its overall taste. When picking apples for your slaw, ensure that they are fresh and crisp. Delicious and Granny Smith apples are the two best apple varieties for slaws. The former is sweet and juicy, while the latter is tart and crisp, which balances the sweetness of the other ingredients.
Use High-Quality Ingredients
Using high-quality and fresh ingredients is the key to making any dish delicious. When preparing your Apple Summer Slaw, use fresh fruits, vegetables, and herbs. Avoid wilted or overripe ingredients, as they can lead to a soggy or unappetizing slaw dish. Additionally, opt for organic ingredients wherever possible to ensure that you're not adding any chemicals or pesticides to the dish.
Customize Your Dressing
The dressing you use for your Apple Summer Slaw is just as important as the ingredients themselves. You can either use a store-bought dressing or customize your own. Either way, ensure that it's light and tangy, with a hint of sweetness. A mixture of apple cider vinegar, honey, and Dijon mustard is a great option for a homemade dressing. If you prefer a creamy dressing, you can mix in Greek yogurt or mayonnaise.
Add a Medley of Fruits and Vegetables
One of the highlights of the Apple Summer Slaw is the medley of fruits and vegetables that add to its textures and flavors. Consider adding shredded carrots, cabbage, celery, and red onions to your dish. You can also incorporate other fruits such as strawberries, raisins, cranberries, or mandarin oranges to add a touch of sweetness.
Get Creative with Garnishes
To make your Apple Summer Slaw look as delicious as it tastes, add some creative garnishes to it. You can top the dish with chopped nuts such as pecans, almonds, or walnuts to add more crunch to the salad. Fresh herbs like cilantro, mint, or parsley can add a pop of color and freshness to the slaw.
Let it Chill
An essential tip for preparing any slaw is to let it chill for at least an hour before serving. This allows the flavors to meld together and the ingredients to absorb the dressing. Moreover, chilling the slaw also enhances its crunchiness, making it even more delightful to eat.

To Sum Up

The above-listed tips can help you create a perfect Apple Summer Slaw that's both refreshing and appetizing. Remember to use fresh and high-quality ingredients, let it chill, and use a light and tangy dressing that adds the right amount of sweetness. Following these valuable tips will ensure that your Apple Summer Slaw is a crowd-pleasing dish that'll be a hit at any summer gathering.
