GOAT CHEESE AND APPLE OMELET

Goat Cheese and Apple Omelet image

This omelet of green apples and goat cheese is an unusual pairing -- at least in the omelet world -- but a wonderful one from Garrett Oliver, the brewmaster of Brooklyn Brewery. On the day we made this recipe, he paired the dish with a glass of Blanche de Chambly, a Belgian-style wheat beer made in Canada.

Categories     breakfast, for one, quick, side dish

Time 20m

Yield 1 or 2 servings

Number Of Ingredients 7

3 tablespoons butter
1/2 Granny Smith apple, peeled and sliced 1/4-inch thick
Pinch sugar
1 small log of fresh goat cheese, about 4 ounces
2 extra-large eggs
1 tablespoon milk
Coarsely ground black pepper

Steps:

  • Melt half the butter in a small nonstick saucepan or wok over medium heat. Add apple and cook until slices start to brown, then add sugar. Stir slices until nicely browned, about 5 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside. Cut 3 slices of goat cheese, 1/2 inch thick.
  • Beat eggs and milk together, just until uniform; do not overbeat. Heat remaining butter in an omelet pan or small nonstick pan over high heat. When butter foams, add eggs and reduce heat to medium-low. When omelet is about half firm, carefully turn it over.
  • Arrange goat cheese on one half of omelet; cover cheese with apple slices. Fold omelet in half, turn off heat and leave for one minute. Place omelet on a warm plate, and sprinkle with black pepper. Serve immediately, with a witbier.

As the name suggests, apple style omelets are a unique and delightful twist to the classic omelets that we all love. These omelets incorporate finely diced and sautéed apples, which not only add a sweet and tangy flavor to the dish but also provide an additional crunch to it. Apple style omelets make for a perfect breakfast, brunch or even a light meal, especially for those who love sweet and savory combinations in their food.

The Key Ingredients

The key ingredients for making apple style omelets are eggs, diced apples, sliced onions, butter, salt, pepper and grated cheese. The recipe can also be customized using other herbs and spices depending on one's taste preferences.

The Cooking Process

To make apple style omelets, first heat butter in a non-stick frying pan over medium heat. Once the butter is melted, add the sliced onions and sauté for a minute or so till they turn translucent.

Then, add the diced apples, a pinch of salt and pepper, and cook for another 2-3 minutes till the apples are slightly soft and well-coated with the butter and seasonings. At this stage, one can also add other seasonings like cinnamon, nutmeg or chili flakes as per their preference.

Once the apple-onion mixture is ready, whisk two eggs in a bowl till they are well combined. Add a pinch of salt and pepper to the eggs and whisk again. Pour the egg mixture into the frying pan over the apple-onion mixture and let it cook for a minute or two till the bottom is set but the top is still slightly runny.

At this stage, sprinkle some grated cheese over the omelet and use a spatula to gently fold the omelet in half. Let it cook for another 30 seconds to a minute to ensure that the cheese is melted and the omelet is cooked through.

Variations

There are several variations of apple style omelets that one can experiment with. Some people prefer to use egg whites instead of whole eggs to make the omelet healthier. Others may add diced bell peppers or mushrooms along with the apples to make the dish more colorful and flavorful.

For those who prefer a sweeter version of this omelet, one can add a teaspoon of honey or maple syrup to the apple-onion mixture. One can also use apple pie spice or pumpkin pie spice instead of traditional seasoning to give the omelet a warm and cozy flavor.

Serving Suggestions

Apple style omelets can be served with a variety of sides like toast, bacon, sausage or fresh fruits depending on one's preference. They also make for a perfect sandwich filling when paired with a toasted bread or bagel. One can also top the omelet with some fresh herbs like parsley or chives and serve it with a dollop of sour cream or Greek yogurt for added creaminess.

Conclusion

In conclusion, apple style omelets are a unique and delicious way to enjoy a classic breakfast dish. They are easy to make, customizable and offer a sweet and savory combination that is hard to resist. Whether it's for a lazy Sunday brunch or a quick weekday breakfast, apple style omelets are sure to delight your taste buds and leave you feeling satisfied and energized.

Apple style omelets are a unique and interesting way to enjoy eggs for breakfast. Combining the sweetness of apples with the savory flavor of eggs, these omelets offer a delightful contrast of flavors that will excite your taste buds. Making apple style omelets is not difficult, but there are some tips and tricks that you can use to create the perfect omelet every time.

Tips for making the perfect apple style omelet

Use the right apples
The key to making a delicious apple style omelet is choosing the right type of apples. You want apples that are sweet and tart, with a firm texture that can hold up to cooking. Good choices include Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, and Pink Lady apples. Avoid softer apples like Red Delicious, which will turn mushy when cooked.
Prep your ingredients
To make a great apple style omelet, you need to prepare your ingredients ahead of time. Slice your apples thinly and sauté them until they are slightly browned and caramelized. You can also chop up some onions, peppers, and herbs to add to the omelet for extra flavor. Having all your ingredients prepped and ready to go will make the cooking process smoother and more enjoyable.
Choose the right pan
When cooking apple style omelets, it is important to choose the right pan. A non-stick pan is ideal for making omelets, as it allows the eggs to slide easily off the pan without sticking. You can also use a well-seasoned cast-iron skillet if you prefer. The size of the pan will depend on how many eggs you are using. Generally, you want a pan that is just big enough to hold the omelet without it spilling over the sides.
Whisk your eggs properly
To make a light and fluffy apple style omelet, you need to whisk your eggs properly. Crack your eggs into a bowl and beat them together until the yolks and whites are fully combined. Use a whisk or fork to create a light and airy mixture. It is also a good idea to add a splash of milk or cream to the eggs to make them even lighter and fluffier.
Season your eggs well
Adding the right seasonings can turn an ordinary omelet into a gourmet dish. When making apple style omelets, consider adding spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger to the egg mixture. These warming spices will complement the sweetness of the apples and create a warm and comforting flavor.
Cook your eggs slowly
Cooking your eggs slowly is the key to making a perfect apple style omelet. Overcooking the eggs will result in a dry and rubbery omelet, while undercooking them will result in a soggy and unappetizing omelet. Start by heating your pan over medium to low heat and adding a small amount of butter or oil. Once the pan is heated, pour in the egg mixture and allow it to cook slowly until the edges start to set.
Add your toppings carefully
When making apple style omelets, it is important to add your toppings carefully. Place your cooked apples and other toppings in the center of the omelet, leaving some space along the edges. Use a spatula to fold the omelet in half, covering the toppings completely. Gently press down on the omelet with the spatula to ensure that it is fully cooked and the toppings are warmed through.
Plate your omelet with care
Once your apple style omelet is cooked and filled with delicious toppings, it is time to plate it up. Use a large spatula to carefully slide the omelet onto a serving dish. Garnish with fresh herbs or grated cheese, if desired, and serve immediately.

Conclusion

Making apple style omelets is a fun and delicious way to enjoy eggs for breakfast. With the right ingredients, tools, and techniques, you can create a perfect omelet every time. Use these tips to make the most of your apple style omelet recipe, and enjoy a flavorful and satisfying meal any time of day.
