SO EASY AND TASTY APPLE STREUSEL

So Easy and Tasty Apple Streusel image

"Crisp fall apples, tossed in cinnamon and baked with delicious streusel. Almost as good as pie, with half the calories and it's in the oven in 10 minutes! Plus, it can be served warm with ice cream, and the smaller size means it won't be there to tempt you later. Enough for a small mini casserole dish that will serve 3-4 people. Double the recipe for an 8x8 pan, quadruple it for a 9x13 pan". Unless you double the batch and use a bigger pan, in which case, it's a great breakfast topping for oatmeal! Enjoy! Adapted from Penzey's spices and the intro is what they said about the recipe. A little history: In baking and pastry making, the term streusel (a German word meaning "something scattered or sprinkled", from the verb streuen, akin to the English verb 'strew') refers to a crumb topping of butter, flour, and white sugar (traditional German) that is baked on top of muffins, breads, and cakes (e.g. Streuselkuchen). Some modern recipes add various spices and occasionally chopped nutmeats. Although the topping is of German origin, it is sometimes referred to as Danish or Swedish.

Valuable Tips When Making Apple Streusel Muffins/Bread Recipes

Apple streusel muffins/bread recipes are a great way to use up apples that are in season, and they make a delicious dessert or breakfast treat. However, making these recipes can be challenging, especially if you’re inexperienced in baking. To help you achieve success in the kitchen, we’ve put together some valuable tips to keep in mind when making apple streusel muffins/bread recipes.
1. Choose the Right Apples
Choosing the right type of apples is crucial when making apple streusel muffins/bread recipes. You want to choose apples that are firm and tart, such as Granny Smith apples. This type of apple holds up well when baking and won’t turn mushy in the oven. If you prefer a sweeter flavor, you can mix in some Honeycrisp apples, but be sure to use more tart than sweet apples for the best results.
2. Measure Accurately
Baking is a science, which means that accurate measurements are essential to achieving the desired outcome. Be sure to measure out all ingredients precisely, including flour, sugar, salt, and baking powder. Inaccurate measurements can lead to dry, dense muffins or bread, which is not what you want.
3. Don't Overmix the Batter
Overmixing the batter can lead to dense, tough muffins or bread. To prevent this, mix the batter just until the ingredients are combined. Be sure to scrape the sides and bottom of the bowl to ensure that all the ingredients are incorporated evenly.
4. Add the Streusel Topping Last
Adding the streusel topping last ensures that it doesn't sink into the batter during baking. Depending on the recipe, you may need to sprinkle the crumb topping on top of the muffins or bread, or you may need to press it into the batter lightly.
5. Use Room Temperature Ingredients
Using room temperature ingredients is essential for creating a smooth and even batter. When ingredients are at room temperature, they combine more easily, creating a better texture and more even baking.
6. Check for Doneness
Check the muffins or bread for doneness by inserting a toothpick or cake tester into the center. If it comes out clean, the muffins or bread are done. If the toothpick has batter or crumbs, continue baking for a few more minutes and check again.
7. Let Muffins/Bread Cool Before Serving
Letting the muffins or bread cool before serving helps the crumb set and ensures the topping stays in place. If you cut into the muffins or bread before they have cooled, you risk them falling apart or not being fully set.
8. Store Properly
Muffins and bread can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to three days. If you want to keep them longer, freeze them in an airtight container for up to three months. To thaw, let them sit at room temperature for 2-3 hours or overnight in the refrigerator. By keeping these valuable tips in mind, you can make delicious and moist apple streusel muffins/bread that are sure to impress. Remember to use the right apples, measure accurately, not overmix the batter, add the streusel topping last, use room temperature ingredients, check for doneness, let the muffins/bread cool before serving, and store properly. With these tips, you’ll be sure to create a successful and indulgent treat that everyone will rave about.
