STRAWBERRY-APPLE SALSA WITH CINNAMON CHIPS

Strawberry-Apple Salsa With Cinnamon Chips image

This simple to make recipe came from a cookbook compiled by the Dietitians of Canada! I was intrigued enough to look inside, and was pleasantly surprised. This is one of many recipes my family and I have enjoyed from this cookbook.

Yield 5 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 7

5 flour tortillas
1 tablespoon granulated sugar
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1 cup washed hulled strawberry
1 medium tart apple, peeled and diced
2 tablespoons liquid honey or 2 tablespoons brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon grated orange zest (optional)

Steps:

  • For the Cinnamon Chips: Brush tortillas lightly with water; sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon.
  • Cut into wedges.
  • Place on baking sheet and bake for 5 minutes or until golden and crisp.
  • (This on it's own is wonderful. Also, I have brushed tortillas with Cajun spice as a snack separate from this entry).
  • Salsa: In a medium bowl, mash strawberries; add apple, honey and, if using, orange zest.
  • Serve with Cinnamon Chips.
  • (I mashed some strawberries, and diced some, just for texture variety).

Fresh and healthy fruit salsas are becoming increasingly popular among food enthusiasts worldwide. One such delicious recipe is the Apple Strawberry Salsa, which offers a perfect blend of sweetness and tanginess to your taste buds. It is an easy-to-make recipe that requires minimal ingredients but is packed with flavor and nutrition. In this article, we will discuss some valuable tips that will help you create a delectable Apple Strawberry Salsa recipe.

Tip 1: Choose the right Apples

Apples are the primary ingredient in your Apple Strawberry Salsa recipe, which means that you must carefully select the type of apple that you will use. Choosing the wrong apple will affect the overall taste and texture of the salsa. You should look for crisp, firm, and juicy apples with a balanced flavor profile that complements the strawberries. Some of the best apple varieties for salsa recipes are Gala, Honeycrisp, Braeburn, and Granny Smith. Once you have selected your apples, make sure to wash and core them before chopping them into small pieces.

Tip 2: Use fresh Strawberries

Strawberries add a burst of sweetness and color to your salsa recipe, and it is essential to use fresh strawberries for this recipe. You can easily find them in your local farmer's market or grocery store, and they should be ripe, plump, and red. Before using the strawberries in your salsa, rinse them under running water, remove the leaves, and then chop them into small pieces that are similar in size to your diced apples.

Tip 3: Add some Heat

Adding a little bit of heat can help balance out the sweetness in your Apple Strawberry Salsa recipe, making it more robust and flavorful. You can achieve this by finely chopping some jalapeno or serrano peppers and adding them to your salsa recipe. If you prefer a milder heat level, you can remove the seeds and membranes from the peppers before dicing them. Be careful not to add too much heat, as it can overpower the other flavors in your salsa.

Tip 4: Include some Herbs

Herbs can add a refreshing taste to your Apple Strawberry Salsa recipe, and they also provide additional nutritional value to your dish. You can use fresh cilantro, mint, or basil in your salsa, depending on your personal preference. These herbs are known for their bright flavors and aromas, which will take your salsa to the next level. You should finely chop the herbs before mixing them with the other ingredients to ensure that they distribute evenly.

Tip 5: Use Lime Juice

Using lime juice is a great way to add tanginess and freshness to your Apple Strawberry Salsa recipe. Lime juice is also an excellent source of Vitamin C, which can benefit your health. To use lime juice, you should first roll it on the countertop to get the juices flowing. Then cut it in half and squeeze the juice into a small bowl. Mix the lime juice with the other ingredients, and adjust the amount to your liking.

Tip 6: Let it Marinate

Marinating your Apple Strawberry Salsa recipe can help the flavors blend and intensify, making it taste even better. After mixing all the ingredients, you should cover it with plastic wrap and refrigerate it for about an hour or more. This will give the salsa a chance to absorb all the flavors, making it more complex and delicious.

Tip 7: Serve it Right

The way you serve your Apple Strawberry Salsa can also affect the overall taste and presentation of your dish. You can serve this salsa with a range of dishes such as tortilla chips, grilled chicken, or pork chops. You can also use it as a topping for tacos or as a refreshing side dish. When serving your salsa, make sure to chill it in the refrigerator before serving it to enhance its flavor and texture.
Conclusion
In summary, making an Apple Strawberry Salsa recipe is easy and fun, and it offers a flavor and nutrition boost to your meals. Careful selection of ingredients, proper preparation, and serving can make a significant difference in the taste and appearance of your salsa. Follow these valuable tips, and you are sure to create a delicious Apple Strawberry Salsa recipe that will impress your family and friends.
