WALNUT, RAISIN, APPLE BARS

Walnut, Raisin, Apple Bars image

I made these yesterday and took them to a Labor Day Cookout and everyone thought they were delicious. I got the recipe from Family Circle Magazine, but I made a few changes. It called for dried apples but I used fresh ones and it didn't have walnuts in it, which I think goes so well with apples. This is going to be a keeper

Ingredients

The key ingredients for making apple raisin bars recipes are:
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2/3 cup sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg powder
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup raisins
  • 1 cup chopped apples

Recipe Preparation

Step 1: Making the dough
Start by preheating your oven to 350°F. Then, combine the flour, baking powder, salt, cinnamon powder, and nutmeg powder in a large mixing bowl. Mix all the ingredients together and set the mixture aside. Next, use a hand mixer or a stand mixer to beat the butter and sugar together until they are creamy and well mixed. Reduce the speed of the mixer and beat in the egg until it is well mixed with the butter-sugar mixture. Now, add in the flour mixture that you had set aside earlier, half a cup at a time. Mix the ingredients together until a dough forms. Keep the dough aside and proceed to the next step.
Step 2: Adding the raisins and apples
Take the raisins and chopped apples and mix them together in another mixing bowl. Then, take about a quarter of the dough that you had prepared and put it in the bowl. Mix the dough with the raisins and apples until they are well incorporated. Repeat this process with the rest of the dough until all of it is well mixed with the raisins and apples.
Step 3: Baking the bars
Take a baking pan and grease it with butter. Then, take the dough-raisin-apple mixture and spread it evenly in the pan. Place the pan in the preheated oven and let it bake for around 25-30 minutes or until the top gets a nice golden color. Take the pan out of the oven and let the bars cool down for a few minutes. Once they are cool enough to handle, cut them into small rectangular bars or squares, depending on your preference.

Apple raisin bars recipes are an excellent option for snacks or desserts. They are easy to make and are suitable for various occasions, such as picnics, parties, and winter holidays. However, making apple raisin bars requires some skills and expertise. This article will provide valuable tips to help you make perfect apple raisin bars every time.

Tip 1: Choose the right ingredients

Using the right ingredients is crucial when making apple raisin bars. For example, using ripe and fresh apples will make the bars more flavorful and juicy. Similarly, using high-quality raisins will bring out the sweetness and tartness of the apples. Moreover, when selecting flour, it's advisable to use all-purpose flour instead of cake flour. All-purpose flour has a higher protein content, which helps the bars hold their shape and prevent them from becoming too crumbly. Finally, when choosing sweeteners such as sugar or honey, ensure you use the right amount. Using too much sweetener can make the bars too sweet, while using too little can make them bland.

Tip 2: Prepare the ingredients properly

Proper preparation of ingredients is another essential factor when making apple raisin bars. Before starting, ensure that you have washed and peeled the apples. You can use a paring knife, peeler, or apple slicer to do this. After peeling and slicing the apples, you should check if they are too juicy. If they are, pat them dry with a paper towel. This will ensure that the bars retain their shape and do not become soggy. Similarly, if you are using dried raisins, you should soak them in warm water for about 10 minutes before using them. Soaking raisins helps them become plumper and juicier, which adds to the texture and flavor of the bars.

Tip 3: Use the right pan

Using the right pan is crucial when making apple raisin bars. You should use a baking pan that is the right size for the recipe you are using. This will ensure that the bars cook correctly and are not too thick or thin. Additionally, it's advisable to use a non-stick baking pan or line the baking pan with parchment paper. Doing this will prevent the bars from sticking to the pan and breaking apart when you remove them.

Tip 4: Be patient

Patience is essential when making apple raisin bars. You should take your time to mix the ingredients well and to ensure that the bars are cooked evenly. Rushing the process can result in undercooked or overcooked bars that lack flavor and texture. Additionally, it's crucial to let the bars cool properly before cutting them. Cutting the bars too early can make them crumble and fall apart. Therefore, allow the bars to cool for at least 10 minutes before cutting them.

Tip 5: Experiment with flavors

Lastly, you should consider experimenting with flavors when making apple raisin bars. You can add various spices such as cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg to bring out the flavor of the apples and raisins. Additionally, you can add nuts such as almonds, walnuts, or pecans to add crunchiness to the bars. Finally, you can drizzle caramel, chocolate, or honey on top of the bars to add sweetness and visual appeal.
Conclusion
Making apple raisin bars is an exciting and straightforward process that requires some skills and expertise. By using the right ingredients, preparing the ingredients correctly, using the right pan, being patient, and experimenting with flavors, you can make perfect apple raisin bars every time. With these tips, you can impress your friends and family with delicious and nutritious apple raisin bars that they will love.
