Probably more cobbler than pie, but whatever it is.....it is AMAZING. I love making this when we have company, because it makes the house smell wonderful. It is a great dessert at the Holidays, because it doesn't take up oven space when you have so many other things to cook. It is great with fresh whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.

Apple pot pie is a delicious dessert that is perfect for fall when apples are in season. Essentially, it is a traditional apple pie with a twist. Instead of a pastry crust on top, it features a crumbly streusel topping that adds texture and flavor to the dish. There are many different recipes for apple pot pie, each with their own unique ingredients and techniques.

Ingredients

The ingredients for apple pot pie can vary depending on the recipe, but some common ingredients include:
Apples:
As the star of the dish, the type of apple used is important. Most recipes call for tart apples such as Granny Smith, but some use sweeter varieties like Honeycrisp or Pink Lady.
Sugar:
Sugar is usually added to the apples to sweeten them up a bit. The amount of sugar used depends on the sweetness of the apples and personal preference.
Spices:
Cinnamon is the most common spice used in apple pot pie, but others like nutmeg or allspice can be used as well.
Flour:
Flour is used as a thickener for the filling.
Lemon juice:
Lemon juice is often added to the apples to give them a tangy flavor and prevent them from browning.
Butter:
Butter is used to sauté the apples and add richness to the filling.
Streusel topping:
The topping for apple pot pie usually consists of flour, sugar, butter, and sometimes nuts or oats for extra crunch.

Technique

The technique for making apple pot pie is similar to regular apple pie. Here are the general steps for making apple pot pie:
1. Preheat the oven:
Set the oven to 375°F.
2. Prepare the apples:
Peel, core, and slice the apples. Toss them with lemon juice, sugar, and spices.
3. Make the filling:
Melt butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the apples and cook until they’re tender and the juices have thickened. Stir in a bit of flour to thicken the mixture even more.
4. Prepare the topping:
Combine flour, sugar, and butter in a bowl. Mix until crumbly. Add nuts and oats if desired.
5. Assemble the pot pie:
Pour the apple filling into a baking dish. Sprinkle the topping over the filling.
6. Bake:
Bake the pot pie for 40-45 minutes or until the topping is golden brown and the filling is bubbly.

Variations

There are many different variations of apple pot pie recipes. Here are a few popular ones:
Salted caramel apple pot pie:

Valuable Tips When Making Apple Pot Pie Recipes

Apple pot pie is a delicious dessert that's perfect for fall. A warm, flaky crust filled with tender cooked apples, spices and topped with a crumbly, buttery streusel topping – who can resist? Whether you're a beginner cook or a seasoned pro, there are some important tips to keep in mind when making apple pot pie. Here are some valuable tips to consider:
Choose the Right Apples
When it comes to making apple pot pie recipes, not all apples are created equal. Some apples are better suited for certain recipes than others. When it comes to apple pot pie, you want apples that will hold their shape when cooked, have a sweet but slightly tart flavor, and won't turn to mush in the oven. Some of the best apples for apple pot pie include Braeburn, Honeycrisp, Granny Smith, and Jonagold.
Pre-Cook the Apples
To ensure the filling of your apple pot pie cooks evenly, it's important to precook the apples before assembling the pie. This step helps to remove excess moisture and softens the apples, making them cook more evenly. To precook the apples, add them to a large skillet with butter, sugar, and spices (such as cinnamon and nutmeg) and cook for 10-15 minutes until just tender.
Use a Quality Pie Crust
A good pie crust is the foundation of any great pie, and apple pot pie is no exception. Whether you prefer homemade or store-bought, make sure you're using a quality pie crust that's sturdy enough to hold the filling but flaky and tender. If you're making a homemade crust, make sure to follow the recipe carefully and keep the dough cold at all times to prevent it from becoming tough.
Add the Streusel Topping at the Right Time
A streusel topping is a delicious addition to an apple pot pie, but it's important to add it at the right time to ensure it turns out perfectly. If you add the streusel topping too early, it may become soggy as the pie bakes. If you add it too late, the top crust may not brown evenly. The best time to add the streusel topping is about 10-15 minutes before the pie is finished baking.
Don't Overfill Your Pie
While it may be tempting to pile your apple pot pie high with filling, overfilling the pie can cause the crust to become soggy, and the filling may leak out of the pie as it bakes. To avoid this, fill the pie just to the top of the crust, leaving a little bit of space for the streusel topping.
Let the Pie Cool Before Serving
It can be tempting to dig into your apple pot pie as soon as it comes out of the oven, but it's important to let it cool for at least 30 minutes before serving. This allows the filling to set, making it easier to serve and less likely to spill out when you cut into it. Plus, warm apple pot pie tastes even better the next day, so it's worth the wait!
Add Flavor with Spices
Spices are key when it comes to making apple pot pie. A combination of cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves is a classic choice, but you can also experiment with other flavors such as ginger, allspice, or cardamom. Consider adding a pinch of salt to the filling to enhance the flavor.
Use Egg Wash for a Beautiful Finish
An egg wash is a simple mixture of beaten egg and water that's brushed on top of the pie crust before baking. This step adds a beautiful shine to the crust and helps the streusel topping adhere to the top crust. To make an egg wash, whisk together one egg and one tablespoon of water, and brush over the pie crust before baking.
Serve with Ice Cream or Whipped Cream
Apple pot pie is delicious on its own, but adding a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream takes it to the next level. The cool, creamy texture balances out the warm, spiced filling, making it a perfect fall dessert.
Customize the Recipe
Lastly, don't be afraid to customize your apple pot pie recipe to suit your taste. You can add chopped nuts, dried fruit, or even a drizzle of caramel sauce to the filling or on top of the streusel topping. Consider adding a touch of lemon zest to brighten up the flavor, or switching out the streusel topping for a lattice crust. The possibilities are endless!
