SIMPLY OVEN BAKED PORK CHOPS AND RICE

Simply Oven Baked Pork Chops and Rice image

This is DH's recipe. It is simple comfort food and is very versatile. You can use chicken quarters in place of chops or chicken broth in place of water. Feel free to experiment with different herbs. We never make this the same way twice. A side note: I would recommend using a bone in, fattier cut of pork and not loin chops in this recipe.

PORK CHOPS WITH APPLES AND ONIONS

Pork Chops with Apples and Onions image

Sauteed apples and onion combine with pork chops for a tastiness that never disappoints.

Provided by Martha Stewart

Categories     Food & Cooking     Ingredients     Meat & Poultry     Pork Recipes

Number Of Ingredients 7

6 bone-in pork chops (loin or shoulder), cut 3/4 inch thick
Coarse salt and freshly ground black pepper
1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil or vegetable oil
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 large white onion, sliced
2 to 3 apples, cored and sliced (about 3 cups)
1 cup beer, white wine, cider, or chicken broth

Steps:

  • Trim the chops of excess fat. Sprinkle generously with salt and pepper on both sides. Heat a 14-inch cast-iron skillet (if you have a smaller one, you'll need to work in batches) over high heat, and then swirl in the olive oil. Lay in the pork chops and don't move them for a few minutes, to assure a good golden sear forms. Turn and brown well on the second side for a total of about 10 minutes. Transfer the chops to a warm plate.
  • Swirl the butter into the pan. Add the onion and apples. Saute until the onion slices are lightly caramelized and the apples have begun to soften, about 8 minutes. Stir in the beer or other liquid. Return chops to the pan.
  • Cook until the pork is tender, about 15 more minutes (depending on the size of the chops), turning halfway through and covering the chops with the apple mixture. If the apple mixture needs a little thickening, transfer the chops to the warm plate again and simmer the mixture on high for a few minutes to reduce. Serve the chops over rice or mashed potatoes with a large spoonful of the apple-onion mixture over the top.

Apple pork chops and rice recipes are a popular choice for those looking for a delicious and satisfying meal. This dish consists of savory pork chops cooked in a sweet apple sauce, served with fluffy rice. The combination of flavors and textures creates a mouth-watering dish that is perfect for any occasion.

The Ingredients

  • Pork Chops: The star of this dish is the pork chops. You can choose to use bone-in or boneless pork chops depending on your preference. Look for pork chops that are about 1 inch thick, as they will cook evenly and stay moist.
  • Apples: Apples are a key ingredient in the sauce that accompanies the pork chops. You can use any type of apple that you prefer, but tart varieties such as Granny Smith work best.
  • Rice: Rice is the perfect accompaniment to the apple pork chops as it soaks up the sauce and complements the flavors of the dish perfectly.
  • Onion and Garlic: These aromatics provide a depth of flavor to the dish and complement the sweetness of the apple sauce.
  • Butter and Olive Oil: These two fats work together to create a deliciously crispy crust on the pork chops and add richness to the sauce.
  • Apple Cider Vinegar: The acidity of the vinegar helps to cut through the sweetness of the apple sauce and provides balance to the dish.
  • Brown Sugar: Brown sugar is used to sweeten the apple sauce and add a caramel-like flavor.
  • Spices: Spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg, and thyme are used to enhance the flavor of the dish and add complexity.

The Preparation

To make apple pork chops and rice, you will need to follow a few simple steps:
Step 1: Prepare the Pork Chops
Begin by seasoning your pork chops with salt and pepper, and then searing them in a pan with a mixture of butter and olive oil. This will create a delicious crust on the outside of the pork chops and keep them moist and tender on the inside.
Step 2: Make the Apple Sauce
Once the pork chops are cooked, set them aside and begin making the apple sauce. Start by sautéing onions and garlic in the same pan as the pork chops. Then add sliced apples, brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, and spices to the pan and let them cook down until the apples are soft and the sauce is thick and bubbly.
Step 3: Prepare the Rice
While the pork chops and apple sauce are cooking, prepare the rice according to the package instructions. Use chicken or vegetable stock instead of water for extra flavor.
Step 4: Serve the Dish
Once everything is ready, plate your pork chops and spoon the apple sauce on top. Serve with a side of fluffy rice and enjoy!

Variations

There are many ways to put your own spin on apple pork chops and rice recipes. Here are a few variations to try:
  • Add chopped bacon to the apple sauce for an extra layer of flavor.
  • Swap out the pork chops for chicken thighs or tenderloins.
  • Use quinoa instead of rice for a healthier alternative.
  • Try using different types of apples to create unique flavor combinations.
  • For a gluten-free version of the dish, use a gluten-free flour to thicken the apple sauce.

Apple pork chops and rice recipes offer a delicious combination of sweet and savory flavors that are sure to satisfy. Apple pork chops and rice recipes combined create a savory and sweet flavor that makes a perfect meal for family dinner or gatherings. The combination of the sweetness of apples and the saltiness of pork chops provides the taste buds with a unique and incredible experience. This dish is not only easy to prepare, but it is also healthy and nutritious. Here are some valuable tips to consider when making apple pork chops and rice recipes.

Choose the right cut of pork:

When it comes to cooking pork chops, it is essential to choose the right cut of meat for the recipe. The ideal pork chop cut for this recipe should be about an inch thick, with some fat on the sides. Choose center-cut boneless pork chops as they are lean, making them a healthier option. The thin pork chops tend to dry out when cooking, while thick cuts will take longer to cook, resulting in a juicy and tender meal.

Select the right apple:

When it comes to selecting apples, different types of apples have distinct textures and flavors that affect the recipe's outcome. For apple pork chops and rice recipes, use firm apples with a crisp texture, like Granny Smith apples. The tartness of Granny Smith apples balances the sweetness of the dish, creating a taste that is not overly sweet. Avoid using soft and mealy apples like Red Delicious apples, as they will turn to mush during the cooking process.

Marinate the pork chops:

Marinating the pork chops adds flavor and moisture to the dish. Marinating the meat for at least an hour before cooking it will help tenderize the pork chops, making them more tender and juicy. Use a combination of dry and wet ingredients when marinating your pork chops, including salt, black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, apple cider vinegar, and soy sauce. Mix the ingredients together and pour the mixture over the pork chops, then refrigerate for at least an hour.

Use chicken broth instead of water:

Instead of using plain water when cooking the rice, use chicken broth to provide extra flavor and depth to the recipe. Chicken broth adds savory flavor to the rice, making it tastier than plain water. Sauté garlic and onions in butter before adding the chicken broth and rice to enhance the recipe's flavor further.

Add more vegetables:

Adding vegetables to apple pork chops and rice recipes increases the nutritional value of the dish. Vegetables also add color, texture, and flavor to the meal. Consider adding vegetables like bell peppers, carrots, green beans, or kale to the dish to add extra nutrition to your meal. Saute the vegetables before adding them to the dish to ensure they are cooked before the meat and rice are fully cooked.

Brown the pork chops:

Before cooking the pork chops in a skillet, brown them first to lock in the flavors and juices. Before searing the pork chops, pat them dry with a paper towel to remove any excess moisture. Then, season the pork chops with salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder before frying them until both sides are golden brown.

Cook at the right temperature:

Cook the pork chops over medium-high heat for about four to five minutes per side or until fully cooked through an instant-read thermometer to avoid overcooking or undercooking the pork. The internal temperature of the pork should read 145 degrees Fahrenheit. Avoid cooking the pork chops over high heat, as it will cause them to dry out and become tough.

Let the meat rest:

Allow the meat to rest on a plate for at least five minutes after cooking it. This allows the juices to redistribute throughout the pork chops, resulting in a more flavorful and juicy meal. Cutting into the meat before it's fully rested will cause the juices to escape, making the meat become dry.
Conclusion:
Apple pork chops and rice recipes are easy to prepare, nutritious, and delicious, making them an ideal meal for family dinner or get-togethers. A combination of the sweetness of the apples, and the saltiness of the pork chops creates an irresistible and outstanding taste. With these valuable tips, you can cook a perfect apple pork chops and rice recipe that is healthy, nutritious, and tasty. Remember to choose the right pork chop cut, the right apple and it's always good to add more vegetables for additional nutrition.
