Apple or Cherry Pie Dessert Pizza image

I love Apple, Cherry or Peach Dessert Pizza and it's so easy to make! My husband prefers cherry over apple so it's always a toss up or we do half and half. Buying store bought pizza is a convenient and fast way than making your own dough. Picture courtesy of toupie.org.

THE FOLDED PIZZA PIE APPLE DOUGHBOY WITH CINNAMON GLAZE

The Folded Pizza Pie Apple Doughboy with Cinnamon Glaze image

Provided by Food Network

Categories     dessert

Time 4h

Yield 15 doughboys

Number Of Ingredients 17

2 tablespoons active dry yeast
1 1/2 cups warm water (105 to 110 degrees F)
3 teaspoons granulated sugar
4 cups all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons vegetable or canola oil
1 teaspoon table salt
1/2 cup (1 stick) butter
2 pounds Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored and cut into 1/4-inch round slices
1 cup dark brown sugar
3 tablespoons ground cinnamon
1 1/2 teaspoons ground nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon table salt
1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
One 7-ounce bag hard cinnamon candy
Melted butter, for brushing
Cinnamon sugar, for sprinkling
Vanilla ice cream, for serving

Steps:

  • For the dough: Stir together yeast, 1 cup warm water and 1 teaspoon granulated sugar to a stainless steel bowl. Whisk together and let sit for 15 to 20 minutes.
  • Add flour, oil, salt, remaining 1/2 cup water, 2 teaspoons sugar and yeast mixture to a stand mixer and stir to incorporate. Mix together on medium speed until all ingredients have been mixed well, 5 to 8 minutes. Portion dough into four 1-pound pieces and place in 4 freezer bags. Freeze immediately to stop the rising process. Dough is ready to use after 30 minutes in freezer. Thaw fully before using.
  • For the apple filling: Melt 7 tablespoons butter in a 4-quart pot. Add apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt. Cook over medium-low heat, stirring mixture frequently to avoid scorching, until al dente.
  • Meanwhile, make a roux by melting remaining tablespoon butter in a small skillet over medium-low heat. Once butter is melted, add flour. Turn the heat to medium and cook, stirring, until golden brown. Remove from heat.
  • Add roux to apple mixture, little at a time, until desired consistency is achieved. Transfer apples to a cookie sheet to cool.
  • For the cinnamon glaze: Place candy in a saucepan and enough water to cover. Let stand until candy has mostly dissolved, then heat mixture to a medium boil, stirring frequently. Cook until a thin syrup-like texture is achieved, about 15 minutes. (Candy mixture is extremely hot and can cause severe burns! Handle with care! If mixture is too thin, cook a little longer; if mixture is too thick, add a little more water.) Let cool and pour into a squeeze bottle.
  • For the doughboy: Preheat oven to 450 degrees F.
  • Roll a 5- to 6-ounce ball of thawed dough into a 4-inch square. Place 2 tablespoons apple filling in center of dough. Stretch opposite sides of dough up and pinch to seal until a rectangular "apple pillow" is made. Brush with butter, dust with cinnamon sugar and bake until golden brown, 12 to 14 minutes, Repeat with remaining dough and filling.
  • Serve immediately with vanilla ice cream; drizzle cinnamon glaze over doughboy and ice cream. Then, enjoy!

Apple pizza pie recipe is a mouth-watering dessert that combines the deliciousness of apple pie with the fun twist of pizza. This dessert is made using pizza dough, apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, and butter. There are various recipes available with different combinations of ingredients, but the primary elements remain the same.

History of Apple Pizza Pie

The origin of the apple pizza pie is unknown, but it can be traced back to the 1940s when pizza started gaining its popularity in the United States. The first recipe appeared in a cookbook in 1965, titled "The Household Searchlight Recipe Book." Since then, it has gained immense popularity, and various versions have been created, including the apple crumble pizza, apple cinnamon dessert pizza, and apple ricotta pizza.

Ingredients

The apple pizza pie recipe requires the following ingredients:

  • Pizza dough
  • Apples
  • Brown sugar
  • Cinnamon
  • Butter

Preparation

The preparation of the apple pizza pie is fairly simple and requires the following steps:

  1. Preheat the oven to 450°F.
  2. Roll out the pizza dough on a floured surface until it's about ¼ inch thick.
  3. Place the dough on a greased pizza pan.
  4. Spread butter on top of the dough evenly.
  5. Slice the apples thinly and arrange them on top of the dough.
  6. Sprinkle brown sugar and cinnamon on top of the apples.
  7. Bake the pizza for 15-20 minutes or until the crust is golden brown.

Variations

The apple pizza pie recipe can be customized according to individual preferences, and here are a few variations:

Apple Crumble Pizza

The apple crumble pizza involves adding a crumble topping made from flour, sugar, butter, and cinnamon. The crumbly texture balances out the sweetness of the apple filling and is a great addition to the recipe.

Apple Cinnamon Dessert Pizza

This variation involves adding a cream cheese base instead of butter on the pizza dough. The cream cheese is mixed with cinnamon and sugar to create a creamy, indulgent base. The apples are then arranged on top and sprinkled with cinnamon

Apple Ricotta Pizza

This version involves mixing ricotta cheese, sugar, and cinnamon as the pizza base. The ricotta cheese brings a light and fluffy texture to the pizza, which pairs well with the sweetness of the apples.

Serving suggestions

The apple pizza pie can be served hot or cold and pairs well with ice cream, whipped cream, or caramel sauce. It is an excellent dessert option for family dinners, potlucks, and parties.

Conclusion

The apple pizza pie is a delicious dessert that's easy to make and is loved by everyone. It's a great way to combine the classic apple pie recipe with a fun twist of pizza. With the customization options available, it's easy to create a unique and tasty version of this recipe.

Apple pizza pie is a delicious, comforting, and easy-to-make dessert. It is the perfect combination of a classic apple pie and a savory pizza with all the goodness of crispy crust, gooey cheese, and saucy apples. If you're looking to make this dessert for your next party or simply experimenting in the kitchen, here are some valuable tips that can help you achieve the best results in your apple pizza pie recipes.

Tip #1: Choose the Right Apples

The key ingredient in an apple pizza pie is, of course, the apples. The type of apple you use will determine the overall taste and texture of your dessert. Some apples are best for making apple sauce or apples chips while others are better for baking, roasting, or frying. When making an apple pizza pie, you want to choose apples that are firm, tart, and juicy. Granny Smith apples are usually the go-to choice for apple pies, but you can also try Honeycrisp, Braeburn, or Pink Lady apples for a sweeter flavor. It's important to slice the apples thin and evenly to ensure that they cook through and don't release too much liquid, which can make the crust soggy.

Tip #2: Use a Pre-Made Pizza Crust

Making your own pizza crust can be time-consuming, especially if you're not an experienced baker. To save time and effort, you can use a pre-made pizza crust as the base for your apple pizza pie. You can find ready-to-bake pizza crusts in the refrigerated section of your grocery store. Make sure to follow the instructions on the package for pre-baking the crust before adding the toppings. You can also use whole-wheat or gluten-free crust for a healthier version of this dessert.

Tip #3: Add a Touch of Cinnamon

Cinnamon is one of the most popular spices in apple pie recipes, and it also goes well with pizza flavors. Adding a sprinkle of cinnamon to your apple pizza pie will give it a warm, cozy, and aromatic taste that will make your taste buds sing. You can mix cinnamon with sugar, brown sugar, or honey to make a sweet spice blend that will coat the apple slices and enhance their natural flavor. You can also add a pinch of nutmeg, allspice, or ginger for a more complex flavor profile.

Tip #4: Top it with Cheese

Cheese is not a typical ingredient in apple pie recipes, but it can be a delicious addition to an apple pizza pie. The cheese will melt and become gooey over the hot apples, creating a savory contrast to the sweet and tart flavors in the pie. You can use Mozzarella, Cheddar, Gouda, or Fontina cheese for this recipe, or even a combination of different types. Keep in mind that cheese can add extra calories and fat to your dessert, so use it in moderation.

Tip #5: Experiment with Toppings

One of the fun parts of making pizza is getting creative with the toppings. The same goes for apple pizza pies. You can use a variety of toppings to make your dessert unique, colorful, and flavorful. Some popular options for apple pizza pie toppings include: - Nuts: Walnuts, pecans, or almonds can add a crunchy texture and nutty flavor to your pie. You can chop them or leave them whole and scatter them over the cheese. - Caramel Sauce: Drizzling some caramel sauce over the hot apple pizza pie can be a decadent and sticky addition that will complement the sweetness of the apples. - Ice Cream: Serving a scoop of vanilla or cinnamon ice cream on top of the warm apple pizza pie can be a contrasting touch that will cool down the hot pizza and add a creamy texture. - Streusel Topping: To make a streusel topping, mix flour, sugar, and butter until crumbly, and sprinkle over the apple slices before baking. This will create a crunchy and buttery layer over the apples that will be hard to resist.

Conclusion

Apple pizza pie is a fun and tasty dessert that combines the best of two worlds - pizza and apple pie. With these valuable tips, you can make sure that your apple pizza pie turns out delicious and satisfying. Remember to choose the right apples, use a pre-made pizza crust, add a touch of cinnamon, top it with cheese, and experiment with toppings to make your dessert more interesting. Happy baking!
