APPLE PEAR GINGER CRISP

Apple Pear Ginger Crisp image

adapted from a recipe on tastykitchen.com. the amount of pears and apples is a guess, since they are different sizes, I used 4 of each but just mostly fill a 2.5 qt casserole- it should be almost to the very top with the crumble topping. candied or crystalized ginger can be used. ice cream is the best way to serve this- classic vanilla is how i had it but cinnamon or ginger (like haagen dazs) would be great too.

Apple Pear Ginger Crisp - A Perfect Fall Dessert

The cool, crisp air of fall calls for warm and comforting meals, and there's nothing quite like a good apple crisp to hit the spot. But have you ever tried adding pears and ginger to your recipe? The combination of flavors is simply delightful, and in this article, we'll share some valuable tips on how to make the perfect apple pear ginger crisp.

1. Choose the Right Apples and Pears

Selecting the right type of apples and pears for your crisp is crucial. Apples that are good for baking include Honeycrisp, Braeburn, Granny Smith, Jonathan, and Rome. Pears that hold their shape during baking include Bosc, Anjou, and Bartlett. Avoid soft or mushy fruits, and pick fruits that are ripe but not too ripe.

2. Cut the Fruits Evenly

To ensure even baking, cut the fruits into small chunks or slices of the same size. If they are too big or too small, they may not cook evenly, resulting in some fruits being too mushy while others are still too hard. A good size to aim for is around 1 inch in diameter.

3. Use Rolled Oats in the Topping

While using flour in the topping is a common ingredient, consider replacing some of it with rolled oats. It adds a nutty flavor and crispy texture that complements the soft and juicy fruits underneath. If you prefer a low-carb or gluten-free option, you can also use almond flour or coconut flour to replace the all-purpose flour.

4. Spice it Up with Ginger

Adding ginger to your apple pear crisp is a game-changer. It offers a hint of spiciness and warmth that complements the sweetness of the fruits. You can either use fresh ginger and grate it finely or use ground ginger for convenience. If you're not a big fan of ginger, you can replace it with cinnamon or nutmeg.

5. Mix the Topping Ingredients Thoroughly

Don't make the mistake of just sprinkling the topping ingredients over the fruits without mixing them first. It's essential to combine the rolled oats, flour, brown sugar, butter, and spices in a bowl and use a pastry cutter or your fingers to mix them until it becomes crumbly. This ensures the topping is evenly distributed and will crisp up nicely in the oven.

6. Don't Overbake

When it comes to baking your apple pear ginger crisp, remember not to overdo it. The fruits will become mushy, and the topping will burn if left in the oven for too long. Aim for a golden brown color on top, and check the fruits' tenderness by poking them with a fork. If they're soft, it's done.

7. Serve Warm with Ice Cream or Whipped Cream

The best way to enjoy your apple pear ginger crisp is warm and served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream. The cold and creamy texture complements the warm and juicy fruits and crunchy topping perfectly. You can also drizzle caramel or chocolate sauce on top for extra decadence.

Conclusion

Making an apple pear ginger crisp in the fall is a simple yet delicious way to enjoy seasonal fruits and spices. With these valuable tips, you can create a crisp that is perfectly balanced in flavors and textures, and it's sure to be a hit among your family and friends. So get your apron on and start baking!
