APPLE PEAR BUTTER WITH PIE CRUST DIPPERS

Apple Pear Butter with Pie Crust Dippers image

Provided by Trisha Yearwood

Categories     condiment

Time 9h

Yield 1 quart fruit butter

Number Of Ingredients 11

6 Gala apples (about 2 pounds), peels on, cut into 1-inch chunks
6 Bartlett pears (about 2 pounds), peels on, cut into 1-inch chunks
1 1/2 cups apple cider
1 tablespoon maple syrup
1 chai tea bag
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
One 9-inch round pie dough
1 large egg, lightly beaten
1 tablespoon sugar
1/2 teaspoon apple pie spice
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt

Steps:

  • For the apple pear butter: Place the apples and pears in the insert of a slow cooker. Pour the apple cider and maple syrup over the fruit, then drop the tea bag in and sprinkle with the salt. Gently stir to coat the fruit, being mindful not to break the tea bag. Cover and set to cook on high until the fruit is completely tender, about 8 hours. Discard the tea bag.
  • Scoop the fruit into the bowl of a food processor with a slotted spoon and pulse until smooth, working in batches if necessary, about 1 minute. Pour the fruit puree into a large nonstick pot. Place the pot over low heat and bring to a simmer, then simmer until the volume is reduced by a third and the color darkens and intensifies, 35 to 40 minutes.
  • For the pie crust dippers: Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 400 degrees F and line a baking sheet with parchment.
  • Place the round of pie dough on a cutting board. Add a splash of water to the beaten egg and brush the crust with the egg wash. Combine the sugar, apple pie spice and salt in a small bowl and sprinkle evenly over the pie dough. Use a pizza cutter or knife to slice the round into 20 strips. Place on the lined baking sheet and bake until golden brown and crispy, 10 to 15 minutes. Set aside to cool for a few minutes.
  • Serve the butter alongside the pie crust dippers or store in an airtight container, refrigerated, for up to 2 weeks. If preparing in advance, allow to cool completely before covering and storing.

PEAR-APPLE BUTTER

Pear-Apple Butter image

This tastes like autumn, but is great any time of year. If fresh pears are not in season, you can use canned pear halves packed in light syrup. Just drain four 16-oz. cans, puree in blender or food processor and simmer with remaining ingredients as directed. This spread is delicious on toast or muffins. It will keep up to 1 month in the refrigerator, so it would make a great gift come holiday season.

CROCK-POT CARAMEL APPLE-PEAR BUTTER-OR JUST APPLE

Crock-pot Caramel Apple-Pear Butter-or Just Apple image

I usually make a lot of apple sauce and apple butter. Last couple years have not yielded a very good apple crop for us. My daughter has 2 pear trees in her backyard and has had bumper pear crops, so I've combined the 2 fruits for this ap'pear butter! I just got canned a batch that had been in the crockpot for 24 hours! NOTE: Alternate method with fewer ingredients: Processed cooked apples through food mill to make approx. 2 1/2 quarts applesauce. Combined that with 1 cup brown sugar, 1 TB cider vinegar, 1 tsp. cinnamon in slow-cooker. Very caramel-y flavor. Made 11 half-pints.

Provided by Carolyn Haas @Linky1

Categories     Fruit Sauces

Number Of Ingredients 10

5 pound(s) pears - ripe or nearly ripe (no pears? use double the apples!)
5 pound(s) apples (i use paula red)
4 tablespoon(s) lemon juice, bottled
1/2 cup(s) apple juice
1 cup(s) brown sugar (add more for a sweeter taste - this amount will make a somewhat tart butter)
2 tablespoon(s) cider vinegar
1/2 teaspoon(s) cardamom
1/2 teaspoon(s) nutmeg
1 teaspoon(s) cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon(s) ground cloves

Steps:

  • Rinse fruit. Cut in fourths, cutting out any bad spots. Put half of the fruit in a pot with half of the apple juice, half of the lemon juice and half of vinegar. Simmer until fruit is easily pierced with fork. (If it's too mushy, that's ok).
  • Let cool a bit, run through food mill. Repeat with other half of fruit and juices.
  • Put into crockpot. Add spices and sugar. Cook on low overnight or until a spoonful put onto a cool plate mounds without a lot of liquid running out of the sides. Stir every once in a while -especially right before you go to bed and as soon as you get up! If you don't sleep well, give a stir during the night, too!
  • NOTE: amount of fruit is approximate. Go easy on sugar, vinegar and spices if you don't have quite enough. My last batch was closer to 8 pounds before cooking.

Use your holdiday cookie cutters to add a little seasonal flair to them. To give credit to the person this recipe came from was Mary June Donavan in Clinton Mass. Thanks Mary June...

The process of making apple pear butter is simple, and the result is a sweet and flavorful spread that can be enjoyed year-round.

The Ingredients

To make apple pear butter, you will need a few simple ingredients. The main ingredients are apples and pears, which are cooked down into a smooth, spreadable consistency. Other ingredients may include sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and lemon juice. These additional ingredients are used to enhance the flavor and aroma of the apple pear butter.
Apples
Apples are a crucial ingredient in apple pear butter recipes, and you can use any variety of apple you like. Sugar
Sugar is added to apple pear butter recipes to enhance the sweetness and flavor of the mixture. The amount of sugar used will depend on your taste preference, and you can adjust the amount of sugar accordingly. When using sugar in apple pear butter, it is best to use a granulated sugar rather than a powdered sugar.

Lemon Juice
Lemon juice is added to apple pear butter recipes to enhance the flavor and also helps to preserve the mixture. Lemon juice also helps to prevent the butter from spoiling, which allows it to be stored for longer periods.

The Cooking Process

The process of making apple pear butter is straightforward and easy to follow. Here are the steps:
Step One: Prepare the Fruit
Begin by washing and peeling the apples and pears. Once they are peeled, remove the core and seeds from the fruit. Chop the apples and pears into small pieces.

In a large pot, add the chopped fruit, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and lemon juice. Stir the mixture well to combine all the ingredients. Put the pot on the stovetop over medium heat and bring the mixture to a boil.
Step Three: Simmer the Mixture
Once the mixture has come to a boil, reduce the heat to low and let it simmer for 3-4 hours. Stir the mixture occasionally to prevent it from burning. As the mixture cooks, it will thicken and become smooth.
Step Four: Blend the Mixture
Once the mixture has thickened and become smooth, remove it from the heat and let it cool slightly. Use an immersion blender or food processor to blend the mixture until it is completely smooth.
Step Five: Store the Butter
Transfer the apple pear butter to a clean and sterile jar. You can store the butter in the refrigerator for up to two weeks or freeze it for later use.

It is a great way to use up extra apples and pears, and it makes for a delicious and healthy snack.
Apple pear butter is a delicious and versatile spread that can be easily made at home. It's perfect for adding flavor to toast, muffins, pancakes, and even meats. Making apple pear butter may seem complicated, but with a few tips and tricks, it's a simple process that yields delicious results every time. In this article, we'll share valuable tips for making apple pear butter recipes. Tip 1: Choose the right apples and pears One of the essential factors in making great apple pear butter is choosing the right fruits. The apples and pears you use will impact the texture and taste of your butter. Ideally, you should choose apples and pears that are ripe, firm, and sweet because these fruits will provide natural sweetness to your butter. Honeycrisp, Gala, Golden Delicious, or Granny Smith apples, and Bartlett or Anjou pears are ideal choices for making apple pear butter. Tip 2: Cut fruits uniformly For uniform cooking, it's important to cut your fruits into equal sizes. Smaller pieces might cook too fast while larger pieces might take longer. Try cutting your apples and pears into cubes that are about 1 inch in size. You can also use a mandolin or food processor for more precise cuts. Tip 3: Use the right sugar One of the essential ingredients in making apple pear butter is sugar. The type and amount of sugar you use will impact the texture and sweetness of your butter. Brown sugar is an ideal option for apple pear butter because it gives a rich, caramel-like taste. Granulated sugar or coconut sugar are also excellent options. Avoid using artificial sweeteners as they might alter the texture and taste of your butter. Tip 4: Add spices for extra flavor Apple pear butter tastes incredibly good on its own, but adding spices can enhance the taste and aroma. Cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, and cloves are traditional spices used in apple pear butter recipes. You can also add ginger, cardamom, or vanilla extract for a unique taste. Tip 5: Cook on low heat for the best results Cooking your apple pear butter on low heat is crucial for achieving the perfect texture and consistency. High heat might burn the fruits and yield an unpleasant taste. Low heat ensures that the fruits break down slowly and cook evenly. You should cook your apple pear butter for at least 8-10 hours on low heat, stirring occasionally, and adding water if necessary. Tip 6: Puree for a smooth texture When your apple pear butter is perfectly cooked, it's time to puree it. Pureeing removes any lumps and gives your butter a smooth texture. You can use a blender or food processor to puree your apple pear butter until it reaches your desired consistency. Some people prefer their butter smooth, while others like it slightly chunky. Tip 7: Store apple pear butter properly Proper storage is essential if you want to enjoy your apple pear butter for a long time. The easiest method is to store your butter in an airtight container and refrigerate it. If you want to preserve it for even longer, you can freeze it in an airtight container. Conclusion: Making apple pear butter is a fun and rewarding experience that yields delicious results. With the right fruits, sugar, spices, and cooking method, you can create the perfect apple pear butter recipe that suits your taste. Follow these valuable tips, and you're guaranteed to make a delicious and nutritious spread that everyone in your family will love.
