Time 1h10m

Yield 6 to 8 servings

Number Of Ingredients 9

6 tablespoons butter
3 cups apples, peeled, cored and sliced
3 tablespoons plus 1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup finely diced crystalized ginger
3 1/2 cups firm-textured white bread in 1/2-inch cubes
3 eggs
2 cups milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon ground ginger

Steps:

  • Butter a six- to eight-cup mold, casserole or baking dish.
  • Melt two tablespoons of the butter in a large, heavy skillet over medium-high heat. When the foam subsides, add the apples, increase heat to high and saute the apples, turning them frequently for about five minutes until they begin to color. Do not allow them to become soft or lose their shape.
  • Add three tablespoons sugar and saute another minute or two, until the sugar begins to caramelize. Stir in the crystalized ginger, remove from heat and transfer the apples and ginger to a bowl.
  • Reduce heat to low, add the remaining four tablespoons of butter to the skillet. When the butter has melted, scrape the pan to loosen any bits of caramelized sugar clinging to it. Add the bread cubes and toss them in the butter until they are evenly coated.
  • Scatter half the apples and ginger into the baking dish. Cover with half the bread cubes. Repeat the layers.
  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
  • Lightly beat the eggs and one-half cup of sugar. Scald the milk. Slowly pour the scalded milk in a thin stream into the egg mixture, stirring constantly. Stir in the vanilla and ground ginger. Pour over the apples and bread in the baking dish.
  • Set the dish in a pan and add boiling water to come halfway up the sides of the baking dish. Place in the middle of the oven and bake 45 minutes, until the top is crusty and golden. Serve while still warm.

Apple ginger pudding is a delicious dessert that combines the flavors of sweet apples with spicy ginger. This pudding is perfect for any occasion, and it is easy to make with just a few simple ingredients. In this article, we will provide you with valuable tips on making the best apple ginger pudding that will impress your guests.

Tip 1: Choose the Right Apples

The key to making a delicious apple ginger pudding is to choose the right apples. You should select apples that are sweet and firm, such as Honeycrisp or Gala apples. These apples will not turn to mush when cooked and will hold their shape in the pudding. Avoid using apples that are soft, mealy, or those that will turn to mush when cooked.

Tip 2: Use Fresh Ginger

When making apple ginger pudding, using fresh ginger is essential. Fresh ginger adds a spicy, warm flavor to the pudding that cannot be achieved with ground ginger. To use fresh ginger, peel the skin off with a spoon and finely chop or grate it. Use about one tablespoon of fresh ginger per 4 cups of chopped apples.

Tip 3: Use High-Quality Spices

Spices are an essential part of any dessert, and the same is true for apple ginger pudding. Use high-quality cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves to add depth and complexity to the pudding. You can adjust the amount of spices used in the recipe to your liking.

Tip 4: Consider Using a Pudding Basin

If you want to make a classic English-style pudding, consider using a pudding basin. A pudding basin is a ceramic or glass bowl used to steam puddings. This method of cooking creates a moist, flavorful pudding with a custard-like texture.

Tip 5: Add Texture with Nuts

To add some texture to your apple ginger pudding, consider adding nuts. Chopped walnuts, pecans, or almonds can be added to the pudding batter before baking. Nuts not only add a crunchy texture, but they also provide some added protein and healthy fats.

Tip 6: Serve with Whipped Cream or Ice Cream

To elevate your apple ginger pudding, serve it with some whipped cream or ice cream. The creamy richness of whipped cream or ice cream balances out the spicy sweetness of the pudding. You can also sprinkle some cinnamon or nutmeg on top for added flavor.

Tip 7: Make Ahead of Time

If you are serving apple ginger pudding for a special occasion, consider making it ahead of time. The pudding can be stored in the fridge for up to three days before serving. Just reheat it in the oven or microwave before serving.

Tip 8: Experiment with Toppings

Don't be afraid to experiment with toppings when making apple ginger pudding. Try drizzling caramel sauce on top or adding a sprinkle of sea salt. You can also add some chopped apples on top for a fresh and fruity garnish.
Conclusion
Apple ginger pudding is a delicious dessert that is easy to make and perfect for any occasion. By using the right apples, fresh ginger, high-quality spices, and experimenting with toppings, you can take your pudding to the next level. Whether you are serving it with whipped cream or ice cream, your guests are sure to be impressed with your homemade creation.
