Time 1h

Number Of Ingredients 9

4 green apples (such as granny smith, medium sized, thinly sliced)
1 tsp lemon juice
1 tsp raw sugar
1 tsp cornstarch / cornflour
1 tsp cinnamon
1 cup muesli (sub with oats or granola)
1 cup plain flour / all purpose flour (plus 55 g in reserve)
3/4 cup butter (room temperature)
1/2 cup raw sugar (plus extra to garnish the top)

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 180˚C (356˚F)
  • Line a deep, circular baking dish or cake dish with half of the apple slices. Drizzle with lemon juice, then dust with half of the cinnamon, half of the raw sugar and half of the cornstarch. Top with remaining apple slices, then sprinkle over with the remaining cinnamon, raw sugar and cornstarch.
  • Pop the muesli in a mixing bowl with the sugar and 1 cup of the flour. Melt the butter in a small dish then pour it over the dry ingredients. Stir to combine. Tip: If needed, you can add a little extra flour until you end up with a slightly moist, mostly crumbly texture where the mixture holds its shape but isn't too sticky.
  • Spoon the crumble over the top of your apple slices. Tip: Gently press down the surface with a spoon until it's nice and even, OR leave it rough for extra crunch once baked.
  • Garnish your crumble with a little extra sugar. Bake for 30-45 minutes or until the crumble topping is golden brown and the apples are soft. Serve hot with cream, custard or vanilla ice cream!

Apple ginger muesli topped crumble is a delicious combination of the tangy apples and the spicy ginger, topped with a crunchy muesli crumble. This dessert is perfect for those who are looking for something that is healthy yet indulgent. As you prepare to make this lovely dessert, there are several valuable tips that you may want to keep in mind.

Tip 1: Choose the right apples

The choice of apples is an important consideration when making apple ginger muesli topped crumble. While you can use any variety of apples, it is best to use firm, tart apples such as Granny Smiths. Using these apples ensures that the apples will hold their shape during cooking and will not turn mushy.

Tip 2: Add ginger for an extra kick

Adding ginger to your apple crumble recipe will give it an extra kick. Ginger provides a spicy and warm flavor that complements the tanginess of the apples. You can use fresh ginger or ground ginger depending on your preference. Fresh ginger has a more intense flavor but requires some chopping, while ground ginger provides a milder taste.

Tip 3: Use muesli for a healthier crumble topping

To make a healthier crumble topping, you can use muesli instead of the regular crumble mixture. Muesli adds an extra nutty and crunchy texture to the dessert while keeping it low in calories. You can choose different types of muesli, including those with nuts, raisins, and other dried fruits.

Tip 4: Pre-cook the filling

Pre-cooking the filling before adding the muesli crumble will ensure that the apples are cooked perfectly. You can start by gently cooking the apples until they are slightly softened before adding the ginger and then let them cook for a further few minutes. Once the filling is ready, you can add the muesli crumble and bake the dessert for the final touch.

Tip 5: Add a touch of sweetness

If you prefer your apple ginger muesli topped crumble to be sweet, you can add some sweeteners to the filling. You can use natural sweeteners such as honey, maple syrup, or agave nectar. These natural sweeteners add an extra depth of flavor while keeping the dessert healthy.

Tip 6: Be creative with your toppings

While muesli makes the perfect topping for apple crumble, you can be creative with your toppings. You can add some chopped nuts such as almonds, pecans, or walnuts for a nuttier flavor. You can also add some shaved dark chocolate to add some richness to the dessert.

Tip 7: Experiment with spices

To add some complexity to your apple ginger muesli topped crumble, you can experiment with different spices. Cinnamon, nutmeg, and cardamom are some great spices that blend well with the flavors of ginger and apples. You can also try using a combination of these spices to see which one works best for you.

Tip 8: Serve it warm

The muesli topping may not remain crunchy if the dessert is left to cool for too long. So, it is best to serve the apple ginger muesli topped crumble warm. You can serve it with a dollop of whipped cream or vanilla ice cream to complete the indulgent experience.

Conclusion

Making apple ginger muesli topped crumble is an easy and healthy dessert that you can indulge in without feeling guilty. Following these valuable tips will help you make a delicious and nutritious dessert that you can enjoy any time of the year. With the right choice of apples, adding ginger and experimenting with different spices, you're be sure to impress your family and friends with this perfect dessert!
