APPLE DUMPLING COBBLER

Apple Dumpling Cobbler image

This is different from most apple dumplings, and delicious! Chopped apples are rolled up in a thin biscuit-type dough, sliced, and baked in syrup. When done, the syrup is absorbed and the top is crisp and sweet. The recipe came from a pamphlet from Martha White Flour Company. If you use all purpose flour, add 1 3/4 teaspoon baking powder and 1/2 teaspoon salt.

Yield 1 pan, 8 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 8

1/2 cup butter
2 cups sugar
2 cups water
1 1/2 cups self rising flour
1/2 cup shortening
1/3 cup milk
2 cups finely chopped apples
1 teaspoon cinnamon

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Melt the butter in a 13 x 9 x 2 inch baking dish or cake pan.
  • In a saucepan, heat sugar and water until sugar melts; set aside.
  • Cut shortening into flour until particles are like fine crumbs. Add milk, and stir with a fork only until dough leaves the side of the bowl. Turn out onto lightly floured board or pastry cloth, knead just until smooth.
  • Roll dough out into a large rectangle about 1/4 inch thick.
  • Sprinkle cinnamon over chopped apples, then sprinkle apples evenly over dough. Roll up dough like a jelly roll. Dampen the edge of the dough with a little water and pinch to seal.
  • Slice dough into about 16 slices, 1/2 inch thick. Place in pan with melted butter.
  • Pour sugar syrup carefully around rolls. This looks like too much liquid, but the crust will absorb it.
  • Bake for 1 hour.
  • Makes 8 servings.

Apple dumpling cobbler is a delicious dessert that is perfect for any occasion. Not only is it easy to make, but it also contains healthy and nutritious ingredients that are beneficial for the body. However, to make the perfect apple dumpling cobbler, it is essential to follow some tips that will give it the right texture and taste.

Tips for Making the Perfect Apple Dumpling Cobbler

Selecting the Right Apples
The first and most crucial step in making an apple dumpling cobbler is selecting the right apples. Ideally, you should choose apples that are sweet and slightly tart, such as Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Braeburn. These apples hold their shape during baking and add a unique flavor to the dish.
Cutting the Apples
After selecting the apples, it is important to cut them correctly. Try to slice your apples into thin, bite-sized pieces evenly. This will ensure that the apples cook evenly and are not still hard in the middle when the cobbler is fully cooked.
Choosing the Right Dough
The dough used in the cobbler is also a critical factor in achieving the perfect apple dumpling cobbler. You can either use pie crust or biscuit dough, depending on your preference. Pie crust dough creates a flaky and crisp texture, while biscuit dough creates a more spongy and moist texture.
Preheating the Oven
Before preparing the dough, you should preheat your oven to the desired temperature. Preheating the oven ensures that the cobbler bakes evenly and creates a golden crust on the top.
Using the Right Baking Dish
Selecting the right baking dish is important in making an apple dumpling cobbler. Make sure to use a baking dish that has high sides to avoid spillage. Additionally, using a glass baking dish helps the cobbler to cook evenly and prevent the edges from burning.
The Right Amount of Liquid
The amount of liquid added to the cobbler also plays a significant role in the final result. You do not want to add too much or too little liquid, as this will either cause the cobbler to be too runny or too dry. Ideally, you should use enough liquid to moisten the dough, but not so much that it becomes soupy.
Adding Spices
Adding spices to the cobbler is a great way to enhance its flavor. Cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger are commonly used spices in apple dumpling cobbler. These spices add a warm and comforting aroma to the dish.
Getting the Right Thickness
The thickness of the dough used in apple dumpling cobbler is crucial. If the dough is too thick, the cobbler will not cook evenly, and the center will be doughy. If the dough is too thin, it may not hold up under the weight of the apples and will fall apart. Start with a medium-thick dough and adjust the thickness according to your preference.
Basting the Apples with Butter
After placing the diced apples into the baking dish and covering them with the dough, it is essential to baste the apples with melted butter. This helps to give the cobbler a beautiful golden crust and adds flavor to the apples.
Topping with Streusel
Although topping the cobbler with streusel is optional, it adds a pleasant crunch to the dish. You can mix flour, sugar, cinnamon, and butter to create the streusel, or you can add chopped nuts, such as pecans or almonds, for extra texture.
Baking Time
The baking time for apple dumpling cobbler may vary depending on the oven and other factors. Generally, it takes about 45 minutes to an hour to bake the cobbler properly. Keep an eye on the cobbler and take it out of the oven when the crust is golden brown and the apples are tender.

Conclusion

Apple dumpling cobbler is a dessert that is perfect for any season. By following the tips mentioned above, you can make the perfect apple dumpling cobbler that is delicious, moist, and packed with flavor. Remember, the key is to select the right apples, cut them evenly, use the right dough, preheat the oven, and baste the apples with butter. Happy baking!
