APPLE CRUMBLE

Apple Crumble image

Apple crumble is one of those desserts all cooks should have in their back pockets. It's a no-fuss favorite that works as well for dessert with a big scoop of ice cream as it does for breakfast with some plain, whole-milk yogurt. This recipe starts with a hefty crumb mixture, studded with pecans and old-fashioned rolled oats. Plenty of butter and sugar ensure the crumb stays crisp after baking, creating a delightful textural contrast between topping and tender fruit. Using a mix of sweet and tart apples that soften at slightly different rates also keeps this recipe interesting.

Tips for Making Apple Crumble Sundae

1. Choosing the Apples

The key to making the perfect apple crumble sundae is choosing the right type of apples. You want apples that are tart and firm, as these will hold their shape when baked. Granny Smith apples are an excellent choice, but you can also use Honeycrisp, Braeburn, or Jonathan apples.

2. Preparing the Apples

Before you start baking, you need to prepare the apples. Peel, core and slice them into small cubes or thin wedges. To prevent the apples from turning brown, you can toss them in a mixture of lemon juice and sugar. This will also enhance the flavor of the apples and make them sweeter.

3. Making the Crumble Topping

The crumble topping is an essential part of an apple crumble sundae. It adds a crunchy texture to the dish and complements the soft apples and creamy ice cream. To make the crumble, you will need flour, butter, brown sugar, and oats. You can also add cinnamon, nutmeg, or ginger to the mixture to enhance the flavor.

4. Baking the Apples and Crumble

Once you have prepared the apples and crumble, it's time to bake them. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a baking dish. Spread the apples evenly in the dish and sprinkle the crumble over the top. Bake for 30-40 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are soft.

5. Serving the Sundae

Now that your apple crumble is ready, it's time to assemble the sundae. Scoop vanilla ice cream into bowls and top with a generous portion of warm apple crumble. You can also add whipped cream, caramel sauce, or chopped nuts for an extra indulgent touch.

Tips for Variations

If you want to switch things up and try something different, there are many variations of apple crumble sundae that you can make. Here are some ideas:
