Yield 4 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 6

pizza dough
3 teaspoons olive oil
1 medium red onion, halved and thinly sliced
1 large green apple, cored and thinly sliced
3 tablespoons fresh rosemary
1 cup gorgonzola, crumbled (for a stronger flavor use Blue Cheese)

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 475 degrees F.
  • 1. Prepare your dough. For a homemade dough recipe click here. If you are using store bought dough, let the dough sit at room temperature for about 1 hour. This will make the dough much easier to spread and hold a shape.
  • 2. In a large skillet sauté the onions until softened and begin to caramelize.
  • 3. Add apple slices and rosemary; sauté until the apple slices begin to soften, about 3 minutes.
  • 4. Brush dough lightly with olive oil.
  • 5. Spread onion and apple mixture over dough.
  • 6. Sprinkle gorgonzola cheese over mixture.
  • 7. Bake on a preheated pizza stone for 8-11 minutes until dough is golden brown.
  • 8. Let cool for 2-3 minutes before cutting for best results.
  • 9. Serve and enjoy!

CARAMELIZED ONIONS, APPLE, WALNUTS AND GOAT CHEESE PIZZA

Caramelized Onions, Apple, Walnuts and Goat Cheese Pizza image

Elegant, rich, creamy, and honestly not hard. Premade pizza dough and just a few ingredients make this a great appetizer or a great side to some roasted chicken or pork. I like to make this in a rectangle, but you can make this round and serve as pizza slices. What ever is easiest for you. This is a wonderful starter for a dinner party with friends. This served along a nice rich fall salad with roasted vegetables is a perfect first course. Roasted duck or cornish hens, a slow roasted pork roast with braised sweet potatoes in a maple bourbon sauce or a rich guinness beef stew. Fall flavors.

Time 1h15m

Yield 16-20 Individual appetizers, 8 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 13

6 medium sweet white onions (cut in half and thin slice)
5 medium granny smith apples (skin on and thin sliced)
1 cup goat cheese (crumbled)
2 tablespoons fresh thyme, chopped fine
1 cup chopped walnuts
1 teaspoon olive oil
2 tablespoons butter
salt
pepper
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 teaspoon garlic, minced
pepper
1 (14 ounce) can refrigerated pizza dough

Steps:

  • Onions and Apples -- In a large non stick skillet on medium high heat, add the butter, olive oil, onions and start to caramelize. Cook about 5 minutes until they start to brown. Then add the apples, thyme, salt and pepper to taste and cook for approximately 20 minutes until the apples get very soft and brown and almost appear to melt "spreadable.".
  • Crust -- I use a baking sheet for this and spray with Pam. Then spread out and lightly roll the pizza dough into a rectangle to fit in the baking pan. Make sure to press the dough out and then prick with a fork all over the crust. This will prevent the crust from "puffing up" or "bubbling" when you cook it. I mix the olive oil, garlic and pepper and brush over the top of the crust and cook at 425 for about 10-12 minutes until it gets slightly brown. Remove from the oven and slightly cool.
  • Topping -- Spread the apple onion mixture over crust and garnish with the goat cheese and walnuts fine chopped.
  • Broil -- I like to broil the pizza for just 3-5 minutes on the middle rack until the cheese starts to soften and melt.
  • Serve -- Cut into squares and serve along side a salad or with any grilled dish. It is a great savory/sweet appetizer or starter dish.

Apple Cheese Pizza is an innovative and unique dish that combines the sweetness of apples with the tanginess of cheese to give your taste buds a mouthful of flavors. This dish is an excellent option for people who are looking for a quick snack or a delicious meal that can be whipped up in no time. The dish is made of crispy thin crust filled with apple slices, grated cheese, and some spices as per the taste. The dish is not only delicious but also healthy as it contains several healthy ingredients, including phytochemical-rich apples and calcium-rich cheese.

History of Apple Cheese Pizza

There isn't any particular record of the history of Apple Cheese Pizza. However, it's believed that the idea was developed in America, where producers have been using apples in several dishes. Although pizza is an Italian dish, apple cheese pizza is not a traditional Italian dish. The first version of Apple Cheese Pizza was made in the early 2000s, and since then, it has been gaining popularity all over the world, and now it's a prominent dish in several cafes and restaurants.

Ingredients Used in Making Apple Cheese Pizza

The following are the primary ingredients used in making an apple cheese pizza:

1. Pizza crust:

A pizza crust is the base of the pizza that holds all toppings together. With Apple Cheese Pizza, you can choose between a thin or thick crust. A thin crust is recommended as it provides a crispier texture, and it doesn’t detract from the flavor of the apple and cheese.

2. Apples:

The type of apples you use in your pizza can significantly affect the taste of the entire dish. Different types of apples provide different flavors; for example, Granny Smith's apples are sour, which provides a contrast to the cheese's creaminess, while honey crisp apples offer a sweet taste that complements the cheese flavor.

3. Cheese:

The cheese selection is key to the dish's success. Cheese that blends well with the apples' sweetness is usually preferred, such as mozzarella or Gouda, though you can experiment with different cheese types and find your favorites.

4. Spices:

With Apple Cheese Pizza, you don't need a lot of spices. You can keep it simple by using salt, pepper, and oregano, although you can add different herbs to give it a unique flavor. Garlic adds extra flavor as well.

5. Olive oil:

Olive oil is used to give the crust its crispiness and golden-brown color. You can use regular or extra virgin olive oil, whichever you prefer.

How to Make Apple Cheese Pizza

Making Apple Cheese Pizza is easy, and it only takes a few minutes. You can either make it in the oven or on the stovetop. Here's how to make it:

Step 1: Make the pizza crust:

Make the dough for the pizza crust by mixing flour, salt, water, and olive oil. The dough should be soft and elastic. Rest the dough for 30 minutes.

Step 2: Prepare Apple Cheese Pizza toppings:

Peel, core, and thinly slice the apples. Grate the cheese and chop up herbs you want to use. This step can be customized to how thick you'd like the apple slices and how much cheese you prefer.

Step 3: Assemble the Pizza:

Roll out the pizza dough into a desired size circle. Lightly brush some olive oil on the dough, then place sliced apples on top of the crust. Sprinkle cheese and herbs.

Step 4: Bake:

Bake the Apple Cheese Pizza in a preheated oven at 400 degrees Fahrenheit for about 15 to 18 minutes or until the crust is golden brown and the cheese has melted.

Conclusion

Apple Cheese Pizza is an excellent variation of classic cheese pizza that provides a unique flavor and is even fun to customize. The combination of sweet apples and tangy cheese creates an unforgettable explosion of flavor that you'll enjoy all the way to your last bite. Try it in the comfort of your home or next time you eat out- you won't regret it!

Pizza is one dish that has been loved by people of all ages. It is a universally favorite comfort food that can be made in various ways by using different ingredients. One such variation is the apple cheese pizza which is a perfect blend of sweetness and tanginess. However, making an apple cheese pizza can be a bit tricky, especially if you are new to the kitchen. Here are some valuable tips to help you make the perfect apple cheese pizza.

The Ingredients

Just as with any recipe, the success of making an apple cheese pizza relies on having the right ingredients. When making an apple cheese pizza, you need to ensure that you use fresh apples that are crunchy and firm, not squishy ones. It is also important to have well-aged cheddar cheese, instead of fresh cheddar cheese, as it gives a sharper flavor. Other ingredients require to make the pizza include pizza dough, pizza sauce, and spices such as rosemary, thyme, and basil.

The Apples

Apples are the star ingredient in an apple cheese pizza, and using the right apples is very important. You should use apples that are firm, sweet and tart at the same time, such as Honeycrisp, Granny Smith, Gala, and Braeburn for the dish. If you are using apples that tend to brown easily, you can toss them into a mixture of lemon juice and water to prevent discoloration. Additionally, for a savory variation of the apple cheese pizza, you could consider sautéing the apples with a little bit of butter, sea salt, and black pepper before adding them to the pizza.

The Cheese

The cheese you choose is also crucial for this recipe. The star of this pizza is cheddar cheese, which not only adds a sharp flavor but also paves the way for creating the right texture for the pizza. Use cheddar cheese which has aged for a minimum of 3-4 months, as it gives a more complex and sharp flavor. Aged cheddar cheese also melts differently than younger cheese, which is ideal when creating a crispy pizza.

The Crust

When making an apple cheese pizza, you need the right crust for the dish. You can use either a store-bought crust or make one from scratch. If you choose to make a crust from scratch, ensure that it is thin and crispy by rolling it out as thinly as possible. This will give you an ideal balance between crispiness and chewiness. Additionally, try using semolina flour or cornmeal to dust the pizza pan, which helps to prevent sticking and provides extra crunch.

The Toppings

The topping of an apple cheese pizza can enhance its flavor, and it is essential to get them right. You can either use a pre-made pizza sauce, which is available in grocery stores, or make one from scratch. If you are making one from scratch, it is important to let the sauce simmer for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to blend together. Once ready, spread the sauce on top of the pizza dough, ensuring that it is evenly distributed. Add sliced apples on top, followed by grated cheddar cheese. Sprinkle a blend of herbs and spices such as rosemary, thyme, and basil on top to enhance the flavors.

Baking The Pizza

Baking the pizza is the final step, and it is important to do it correctly. Preheat the oven to 450°F and place the pizza on the lower rack of the oven. This allows the crust to cook more evenly and avoids burning the cheese. Bake the apple cheese pizza for 10-12 minutes until the crust is crispy and golden brown. Once the pizza is done, remove it from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before slicing.

Conclusion

In conclusion, making an apple cheese pizza can be a fun and enjoyable experience when done right. It is important to have the right ingredients, including fresh apples, aged cheddar cheese, and pizza dough. Additionally, ensure that you sauté the apples with a little bit of butter for a savory variation, use the correct pizza sauce simmered for 30 minutes, and bake the pizza on the lower rack of the oven. By following these valuable tips, you can make a perfect apple cheese pizza that your family will love.
