Time 45m

Yield 12 roll-ups

Number Of Ingredients 18

2 large eggs, beaten to blend
1/3 cup milk
2 tablespoons granulated sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
12 slices soft white sandwich bread
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
Confectioners' sugar, for serving
Maple syrup, for serving
2 bananas, halved and thinly sliced
12 medium strawberries, roughly chopped
1/4 cup cream cheese, at room temperature
1 1/2 cups blueberries
1/4 cup creamy peanut butter
1/2 apple, thinly sliced and cut into matchsticks
6 thin slices Cheddar, halved
12 pre-cooked breakfast sausage links

Steps:

  • For the roll-ups: Whisk together the eggs, milk, granulated sugar, vanilla, cinnamon and salt in a medium bowl until completely combined. Set aside until ready to use.
  • Using a rolling pin, roll each slice of bread to flatten and make more pliable. Trim the crust off each slice.
  • For the banana-strawberry: Arrange a few slices of banana along the bottom edge of a slice of bread making a 1-inch strip of banana all the way across. Top with a line of chopped strawberries (about 1 tablespoon), being careful not to put too many down or you might not be able to roll it up. Starting with the side of the bread with the fruit, carefully roll into a tight log so that the fruit is snugly wrapped in bread. Continue with remaining bread and fruit.
  • For the blueberry and cream cheese: Spread 1 teaspoon cream cheese in a 3/4-inch strip along the bottom of a slice of bread. Top with 2 rows of blueberries (about 2 to 3 tablespoons) being careful not to put too many down or you might not be able to roll it up. Starting with the side of the bread with the fruit, carefully roll into a tight log so that the fruit is snugly wrapped in bread. Continue with the remaining bread and fillings.
  • For the apple-peanut butter: Spread 1 teaspoon peanut butter in a 3/4-inch strip along the bottom of a slice of bread. Top with some apple, being careful not to put too much down or you might not be able to roll it up. Starting with the side of the bread with the fruit, carefully roll into a tight log so that the fruit is snugly wrapped in bread. Continue with the remaining bread and fillings.
  • For the sausage and cheese: Lay half a slice of Cheddar along the bottom of a slice of bread. Top with a cooked sausage link. Starting with the side of the bread with the sausage, carefully roll into a tight log so that the sausage is snugly wrapped in bread. Continue with the remaining bread, cheese and sausages.
  • For cooking: Dip each roll-up in the reserved egg mixture and turn to coat all sides, making sure that the egg seals up the exposed edge so that the roll-up doesn't unravel. Repeat with the remaining roll-ups.
  • Heat 1 tablespoon butter in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat and cook half of the roll-ups, gently pressing down on each roll-up to make a flat edge against the pan, until all 4 sides are golden brown, about 1 minute per side. Transfer to a plate and cover to keep warm. Repeat with the remaining tablespoon butter and remaining 6 roll-ups.
  • Dust with confectioners' sugar and serve with maple syrup on the side.

If you are a fan of breakfast foods and love experimenting with new recipes, then you have to try the delicious apple butter french toast rollups recipe. This dish is perfect for individuals of all ages and tastes, and is a great way to add some variety and excitement to your breakfast routine. In this article, we will be sharing some valuable tips that you can use to make the perfect apple butter french toast rollups without any hassle.

Tip #1: Choose the Right Bread

The first and most important tip that you need to keep in mind when making apple butter french toast rollups is to choose the right bread. For this recipe, the best bread to use is thick white bread, as it can hold the filling better and won't crumble or fall apart when rolled. You can also use brioche or challah bread, as they add a bit of sweetness to the dish and are perfect to use for French toast.

Tip #2: Don't Over-soak the Bread

The second tip is to not over-soak the bread when making the French toast, as this can make the bread too soggy and difficult to roll up. To avoid this, be sure to dip the bread in the egg mixture for only a few seconds on each side, and then immediately transfer it to a hot skillet or griddle to cook.

Tip #3: Use a Rolling Pin

To make the perfect apple butter French toast rollups, you need to make sure that your bread is rolled tightly and compactly around the filling. This can be difficult to do by hand, so a helpful tip is to use a rolling pin. Simply place your bread on a flat surface, spread the apple butter filling evenly across the center, and then roll it up tightly using a rolling pin to get a consistent and compact roll.

Tip #4: Use the Right Filling

One of the key factors that make apple butter French toast rollups so delicious is the filling. In this recipe, apple butter is used as the filling as it has a sweet and slightly tangy flavor that pairs perfectly with the bread and egg mixture. You can also add some cinnamon, nutmeg, or vanilla extract to the filling to enhance the flavors and give it a little more depth.

Tip #5: Use a Good Skillet or Griddle

Another important tip to keep in mind when making apple butter French toast rollups is to use a good skillet or griddle. If you use an old or worn-out pan, the French toast may stick to the surface or not cook evenly, resulting in a less than appetizing dish. When cooking the rollups, make sure to use a non-stick pan that is heated to medium-high heat, and add a little bit of butter or oil to ensure that the bread doesn't stick.

Tip #6: Cut the Rollups into Bite-sized Pieces

Once your apple butter French toast rollups are cooked and ready to serve, it's important to cut them into bite-sized pieces. This makes it easier to share with others or to eat as a snack without having to touch or bite into a large piece. To cut the rollups, simply use a sharp knife to slice them into 1-inch pieces, and garnish with powdered sugar, maple syrup, or your favorite toppings.

Tip #7: Experiment with Toppings

Lastly, a great tip for making the perfect apple butter French toast rollups is to experiment with different toppings. While powdered sugar and maple syrup are classic options, there are many other toppings that you can try to add some variety to your dish. Some ideas include whipped cream, caramel sauce, chopped nuts, fresh berries, or even a dollop of yogurt.

Conclusion

In conclusion, apple butter French toast rollups are a delicious and easy-to-make breakfast dish that everyone should try. By following these tips, you can make the perfect rollups that are sweet, savory, and packed with flavor. Remember to use the right bread, roll it tightly, use the right filling, use a good skillet, cut the rollups into bite-sized pieces, and experiment with toppings to make the dish your own. Enjoy!
