Time 1h10m

Yield 10 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 11

4 -4 1/2 cups bread, cubed
4 large eggs
1 1/4 cups milk
1 cup heavy cream
1/2 cup maple syrup (grade B preferred)
1/4 cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon maple extract (or vanilla extract)
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons decorator sugar (optional)
1/4 cup diced pecans (optional) or 1/4 cup walnuts (optional)

Steps:

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F and grease a 1 1/2-quart casserole or baking dish.
  • Place the bread cubes into the prepared pan. Whisk the eggs, milk, cream, syrup, sugar, flavoring, nutmeg, and salt together. Pour over the bread cubes and let sit for 15 minutes to absorb the liquid. Press the cubes down into the liquid if the edges are dry.
  • Bake the pudding for 35 minutes. Remove from the oven and sprinkle with the nuts and sugar. Return to the oven and bake for an additional 15 to 20 minutes, until the pudding has puffed up and is light brown around the edges. Remove from the oven and let stand for a few minutes-the pudding will sink as it sits; that's OK. Serve immediately, or reheat before serving.

Valuable Tips when Making Apple and Maple Bread Pudding Recipes

Making a delicious apple and maple bread pudding requires the use of the right ingredients along with a few useful tips. The following are some of the valuable tips that can help you to make the most delicious apple and maple bread pudding.
1. Choosing the Right Bread
The type of bread that you use in making your bread pudding plays a significant role in the outcome of the recipe. Choosing a dense, chewy bread helps to prevent the bread from falling apart into mush during the assembling process. French bread or sourdough is the best choice for a sturdy, dense bread in this recipe. Fresh bread also works well. However, if you don't have fresh bread, you can use dry or stale bread, as it will absorb the custard mixture better.
2. Using the Right Apples
The choice of apples you use in your bread pudding recipe is equally essential in achieving the perfect result. Apples with a soft, mushy texture that fall apart easily when cooked are not recommended. Select firm, crisp apples like Honeycrisp, Granny Smith, or Jonagold. These apple varieties hold their shape well and offer a sweet and tangy flavor that complements the other ingredients in your bread pudding recipe.
3. Preparing the Apples
When it comes to preparing the apples, you want to make sure that they are evenly sliced to ensure even cooking. Ensure to peel, core, and slice the apples before mixing them with the other ingredients. Slicing the apples too thin might cause them to become net and mushy when cooked, while cutting them too thick could result in them not cooking correctly.
4. Maple Syrup or Maple Flavoring?
The flavor of maple syrup can be intense, and it can easily overpower the other ingredients in your bread pudding recipe. Using pure maple syrup, therefore, might not be the best option, depending on your taste preference. A few drops of maple flavoring added to your custard mixture help to give your recipe that maple flavor you want without overpowering other flavors.
5. Mixing Your Custard
The custard mixture is what keeps the bread pudding moist and flavorful. The custard should not be too heavy, as this can cause the bread pudding to become too dense and heavy. Whisking the eggs with the cream and milk mixtures until frothy is a good way to create a light and tasty custard. Adding a touch of vanilla or almond extract to your custard mixture will help to create a unique flavor.
6. Soaking the Bread
Soaking the bread is an essential part of the bread pudding recipe. It provides moisture to the bread and helps to ensure that it cooks through evenly. To soak the bread, you will need to layer the slices of bread and the apple mixture in the baking dish, then pour the custard over the top. Using your hands to press the bread down gently into the custard mixture will ensure that it is evenly coated.
7. Keeping an Eye on Cooking Time
Cooking time can vary depending on the size of the baking dish you are using and how you layer the ingredients. A 9x13 inch baking dish may require more cooking time than a smaller dish. To ensure even cooking, you need to check the bread pudding regularly. Once the top is browned and the bread pudding is baked through, remove it from the oven and let it sit for a few minutes before serving.
8. Presentation
Presentation is just as important as taste when it comes to preparing any dish, and bread pudding is not an exception. A sprinkle of powdered sugar over the top can add an aesthetic touch to your dish. Add a dollop of whipped cream or ice cream and some fresh fruit for an extra touch of decadence. In conclusion, making the perfect apple and maple bread pudding requires the right ingredients and techniques. By using these valuable tips, you can create a delicious dessert that your family and friends will enjoy. Always remember to choose the right bread, consider the type of apples you use, use the right amount of maple flavoring, mix your custard mixture correctly, soak your bread correctly, check for even cooking, and finally, consider the presentation of the dish. With these valuable tips, you can make the tastiest apple and maple bread pudding recipe.
