So, if you are looking for a quick and easy recipe to make for your family or friends, this is one you should definitely try your hands at.

Ingredients

There are several ingredients that go into making apple and cheese scones. The exact amount will vary depending on how many scones you are looking to make. Nevertheless, here are some of the main ingredients that you will need:

1. Flour

This is the main ingredient in making scones. It’s essential to the recipe and gives the scones their structure. All-purpose flour works great in this recipe.

2. Baking Powder

Baking powder is used as a leavening agent in this recipe. It helps the scones rise and gives them a light and fluffy texture.

3. Salt

Salt is added to enhance the flavor of the scones. Just a pinch is enough.

4. Butter

Unsalted butter is recommended in this recipe. It helps in binding the dough, adds flavor, and makes the scones tender and crumbly. Additionally, the butter has to be cold and in small cubes.

5. Apples

Apples are the hero of this recipe. They add a delicious sweetness and texture to the scones. Tart apples are preferred to balance the sweetness.

6. Cheese

The cheese used in this recipe is cheddar cheese. It’s added to give the scones a savory flavor, a nutty texture, and it complements the sweetness of the apples.

7. Milk

Milk is used to bring the dough together. It also helps in hydrating the ingredients, resulting in soft and fluffy scones. Whole milk or heavy cream is best for this recipe.

Preparation

The preparation of apple and cheese scones is fast and easy. The steps involve:

1. Mixing the dry ingredients

In a large bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt. Mix until well combined.

2. Cutting in the butter

Add the cubed butter to the dry ingredients and cut it in with a pastry cutter or a fork until you get a coarse texture. Don't overdo this step, as some larger pieces of butter should still be visible.

3. Adding in the apples and cheese

Add the grated cheese and diced apples to the bowl and mix with the dry ingredients until they are coated evenly. This will help distribute them evenly in the dough.

4. Adding the milk

Pour in the milk and stir until everything is combined. Be sure to be gentle as you stir, and don't knead the dough too much.

5. Shaping the dough

Transfer the dough to a floured surface and shape it into a circular shape that is about an inch thick. Using a knife, divide the dough into 8 equal triangular shapes. Alternatively, you can use a biscuit cutter to make round scones.

6. Baking the scones

Place the scones on a baking sheet and brush the tops with milk. Bake in a preheated oven at 425°F for 15-20 minutes, or until they are golden brown. Let them cool on the sheet for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Apple and cheese scones are an excellent choice for breakfast, brunch, or anytime snack. They are savory but have a hint of sweetness from the apples, making them a versatile baked good that can be enjoyed in several ways. Making apple and cheese scones is not difficult, but it requires specific techniques and ingredients to achieve the perfect texture and flavor.

Valuable tips when making apple and cheese scones recipes

1. Use the right flour
Using the right flour is essential when making scones. It affects the texture and taste of the final product. For apple and cheese scones, it is recommended to use all-purpose flour or a mix of all-purpose and whole wheat flour. Using cake flour is not ideal as it will make the scones too light and fluffy.
2. Keep ingredients cold
Keeping ingredients cold is crucial when making scones. It helps to create a flaky and tender texture. Use cold butter and cut it into small pieces before adding it to the dry ingredients. Freeze the grated cheese for about 30 minutes before adding it to the mix.
3. Handle the dough gently
Scones require a light hand when handling the dough. Overworking the dough can make it tough and result in flat scones. Mix the dry and wet ingredients until just combined, and then gently fold in the diced apples and grated cheese.
4. Don't overbake
Scones should have a golden brown color but should not be overbaked. Overbaking can result in dry and hard scones. Check the scones often and remove them from the oven as soon as they are baked through.
5. Use a pastry blender
A pastry blender is a handy tool when making scones. It helps to cut the butter into the flour quickly, resulting in a flaky texture. If you don't have a pastry blender, you can use two knives or your fingers to cut the butter into the flour.
6. Add flavorings
Apple and cheese scones are delicious on their own, but you can add extra flavorings to make them even more special. Add cinnamon or nutmeg for a warm and cozy flavor, or chopped nuts or dried fruit for extra texture.
7. Use cold liquids
When making scones, use cold liquids such as milk or heavy cream. Cold liquids help to keep the butter cold, resulting in a flaky texture. If the liquids are not cold, put them in the refrigerator for a few minutes before adding them to the dry ingredients.
8. Brush with egg wash
Before baking, brush the scones with egg wash. Egg wash gives the scones a beautiful shine and helps them to brown evenly. To make egg wash, whisk an egg with a little bit of milk or water.
9. Cut them properly
Cutting scones properly is essential to ensure that they bake evenly. Use a sharp knife or biscuit cutter to cut the scones. Push straight down and lift the cutter without twisting, which can seal the edges and prevent the scones from rising evenly.
10. Let them cool
Let the scones cool for a few minutes on a wire rack after removing them from the oven. This allows them to set and firm up before enjoying them.

Conclusion

Apple and cheese scones are delicious and easy to make. Follow these tips for a successful batch of scones every time. Remember to use the right flour, keep ingredients cold, handle the dough gently, do not overbake, use a pastry blender, add flavorings, use cold liquids, brush with egg wash, cut them properly, and let them cool before enjoying. With practice, you will master the art of making the perfect apple and cheese scones that are sure to impress your friends and family.
