CHOPPED SALAD WITH APPLES, WALNUTS AND BITTER LETTUCES

Chopped Salad With Apples, Walnuts and Bitter Lettuces image

The best place for a salad on the Thanksgiving menu is at the beginning of the meal, before everybody fills up. We often pass around plates of this vegetarian chopped salad (no bacon) to accompany the drinks before we sit down at the table. The salad is a great mix of bitter and sweet flavors, juicy and crunchy, and comforting, too. Sweet/tart, crisp juicy apples like Braeburns, Jonagolds, Honey Crisp and Granny Smith work well here.

Salads are one of the best ways to incorporate a healthy serving of vegetables into your diet. Apple and bitter lettuces salad is an exciting combination of sweet apple and the slightly bitter taste of lettuce leaves. Not only does it have a refreshing crunch, but it is also incredibly nutritious. Here are some valuable tips when making apple and bitter lettuces salad recipes.

Choose the right lettuce

Choosing the right lettuce for your salad is essential as it forms the base of the dish. For an apple and bitter lettuces salad, you want to use bitter greens like arugula, endive, or watercress. These greens go well with sweet, juicy apples and create a balance of flavors. Avoid using mild greens such as butter lettuce or romaine as they can be too bland.

Wash and dry the lettuce

Before using any lettuce, it is important to give it a thorough wash. Lettuce leaves can trap dirt and bacteria, which can cause food poisoning. To wash lettuce, fill a large bowl with cold water and submerge the leaves. Swirl them around a few times until all dirt has fallen off, and then dry them gently. After washing, make sure to dry the leaves properly to prevent the dressing from becoming watered down.

Choose the right apple

Apples are the main ingredient of an apple and bitter lettuces salad. When choosing the right apple, look for a firm and crisp one that is slightly tart. Apples such as Granny Smith, Braeburn, or Honeycrisp work well in this salad. Make sure to remove the core and cut the apples into thin, bite-sized pieces.

Add some crunch

To add some extra crunch and flavor to your salad, try adding some nuts or seeds. Walnuts, almonds, or pecans work particularly well in this recipe. Toast them lightly in a dry pan to bring out their natural nutty flavor. You can also add some sunflower or pumpkin seeds for extra texture and a nutritional boost.

Add some cheese

Cheese is an optional ingredient in an apple and bitter lettuces salad but can give it a delicious creaminess. Blue cheese, feta cheese, or goat cheese all work well in this recipe. Just crumble the cheese and sprinkle it over the salad before serving.

Make a simple dressing

The dressing is an essential part of any salad and can make or break the dish. For an apple and bitter lettuces salad, a simple vinaigrette works well. Combine olive oil, vinegar, honey, and Dijon mustard in a small jar, and shake thoroughly. You can adjust the amount of honey and vinegar to your taste preference.

Assemble the salad

Once all the ingredients are ready, it’s time to assemble the salad. Start by placing the lettuce leaves in a large bowl. Then add the sliced apples, nuts, seeds, and cheese on top. Dress the salad with the vinaigrette just before serving, and toss gently to combine all the ingredients.

Conclusion

Making an apple and bitter lettuces salad is an easy and delicious way to incorporate more vegetables into your diet. By choosing the right lettuce, apple, and dressing, you can create a balance of flavors and textures that will leave you feeling satisfied and healthy. Remember to wash and dry your lettuce thoroughly and add some crunch with nuts or seeds to elevate your salad to the next level.
