Time 2h25m

Yield 6 to 8 servings

Number Of Ingredients 23

1 (3 to 3 1/2-pound) bottom round rump roast, at room temperature
1 teaspoon Essence, recipe follows
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
3 tablespoons olive oil
1/2 large yellow onion, sliced
3 sprigs fresh thyme
3 cups canned low-sodium beef broth
2 tablespoons cornstarch
1/4 cup water
Easy Rice, recipe follows
2 1/2 tablespoons paprika
2 tablespoons salt
2 tablespoons garlic powder
1 tablespoon black pepper
1 tablespoon onion powder
1 tablespoon cayenne pepper
1 tablespoon dried oregano
1 tablespoon dried thyme
2 cups long-grain white rice
4 cups water or canned, low-sodium chicken broth
1 tablespoon unsalted butter
1 1/2 teaspoons salt

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 275 degrees F.
  • Season the meat on all sides with the Essence, salt, and pepper. Heat the oil in a large Dutch oven and brown on all sides, about 4 minutes per side. Remove the roast from the pan and add the onion slices and thyme sprigs. Place the roast on top of the onions, fat side up. Add the beef broth to the pan and place in the oven, uncovered. Roast until the beef is tender and registers an internal temperature of 130 to 135 degrees F, about 1 1/2 to 2 hours.
  • Transfer the roast to a platter or cutting board and let rest for 15 minutes before carving.
  • Meanwhile, use a slotted spoon to discard the onions and thyme sprigs. Place the Dutch oven over medium-high heat to heat the beef drippings. Combine the cornstarch and water in a small bowl until dissolved. Add the cornstarch mixture to the beef drippings and bring to a boil. Cook, stirring constantly, until slightly thickened, 2 to 3 minutes. Remove from the heat and carefully transfer to a gravy boat or decorative bowl.
  • Carve the beef thinly and arrange the slices on large plates with rice on the side. Drizzle gravy over each portion and serve alongside of the Easy Rice.
  • Combine all ingredients thoroughly.

  • In a 2-quart saucepan, combine the rice, water, butter and salt, and bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer until all the liquid is absorbed, about 20 minutes. Remove the pan from the heat and let sit, covered, for 10 minutes. Uncover and fluff the rice with a fork before serving.

Roast beef is a classic dish that is delicious and easy to make. Whether you're hosting a dinner party or having a casual family meal, roast beef is always a crowd-pleaser. However, to get the perfect roast beef, there are some valuable tips you need to know. In this article, we will cover the expert tips that will help you make any night roast beef recipes perfectly.

Choose the Right Cut of Meat

One of the most important things to consider when making roast beef is choosing the right cut of meat. The leaner cuts of beef are best for roasting, such as tenderloin, sirloin, or ribeye. These cuts have enough fat to keep the meat moist during the roasting process but not too much that it becomes greasy or tough. The fattier cuts like chuck roast or brisket are better suited for slow cooking methods like braising.

Seasoning

Seasoning is vital when it comes to cooking delicious roast beef. Some people prefer only salt and pepper, while others like to add more herbs and spices to get extra flavor. If you want to keep it simple, just sprinkle salt and pepper on the surface of the beef before roasting. However, if you want to add more depth of flavor, try using herbs like rosemary, thyme, or garlic. You can also use a rub made up of salt, pepper, and other spices like paprika, chili powder, or cumin.

Temperature and Timing

Another essential tip to follow when roasting beef is to get the temperature and timing right. The temperature you cook your beef at will depend on how you want it cooked. For rare beef, set the oven temperature at 120°C and cook for 15 minutes per 450g. For medium-rare, set the temperature to 140°C and cook for 18 minutes per 450g. For medium beef, set the temperature to 160°C and cook for 20 minutes per 450g. Remember that these are only guidelines, and the best way to tell if your beef is cooked to your liking is by using a meat thermometer.
How to use the meat thermometer
Insert the meat thermometer into the thickest part of the roast, making sure not to touch any bones. For rare beef, the thermometer should read 45°C; for medium-rare, it should read 50°C, and for medium, it should read 55°C. Let the beef rest for 10-15 minutes before slicing to allow the juices to evenly distribute.

Resting Time

Resting time is crucial for the flavor and tenderness of the beef. When the beef is done cooking, remove it from the oven and let it rest for 10-15 minutes before slicing. Resting the beef allows the juices to settle back into the meat, making it tender and juicy. If you cut into the beef immediately after cooking, the juices will escape, and the meat will become dry and tough.

The Right Pan

Choosing the right pan is also essential when making roast beef. A heavy-duty, oven-safe roasting pan is ideal for roasting beef. Choose a pan that is not too shallow, as you want to have enough space for the beef to cook evenly. Additionally, a roasting rack can be helpful to keep the beef elevated and allow the heat to circulate around it. You can also use a cast-iron skillet, which can be used on the stovetop and in the oven.

Vegetables and Flavors

Roast beef is delicious on its own, but if you want to add some extra flavor, vegetables, and flavors are a great addition. Root vegetables like carrots, potatoes, onions, and parsnips can be roasted along with the beef. Season them with salt, pepper, and herbs to make a complete meal. You can also add various liquids to enhance the flavor of the beef, like red wine or beef broth.
Conclusion
Making roast beef may seem intimidating, but following these valuable tips can help you create a perfect roast beef recipe that will have your guests asking for your secret. Remember to choose the right cut of meat, season it well, cook it to the right temperature, let it rest, and choose the right pan. Adding vegetables and flavors can also take your roast beef to the next level. Follow these tips, and you will be able to create a delicious roast beef recipe that everyone will love.
