Classic Chocolate Chip Cookies image

Small changes can make a big difference. We took our basic chocolate chip cookie and made one isolated change at a time. We added, swapped, melted, baked low, baked high and chilled. But mostly we had fun. And with each slight tweak we made a new cookie with a different texture, look and taste from the last. Use our guide as a way to find the perfect cookie for you. No big changes necessary.

Time 1h35m

Yield about 30 cookies

Number Of Ingredients 9

2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour (see Cook's Note)
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon fine salt
1 1/2 sticks (12 tablespoons) unsalted butter, at room temperature
3/4 cup packed light brown sugar
2/3 cup granulated sugar
2 large eggs
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
One 12-ounce bag semisweet chocolate chips

Steps:

  • Position oven racks in the top and bottom thirds of the oven, and preheat to 375 degrees F. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment.
  • Whisk together the flour, baking soda and salt in a large bowl. Beat the butter and both sugars with an electric mixer on medium-high speed in a second large bowl until light and fluffy, about 4 minutes. Add the eggs to the butter mixture, one at time, beating after each addition to incorporate; beat in the vanilla. Reduce the speed to medium, add the flour mixture, and beat until just incorporated. Stir in the chocolate chips.
  • Scoop 12 heaping tablespoons of dough onto each prepared baking sheet about 2 inches apart. Roll each into a ball with slightly wet hands. Bake until the cookies are golden but still soft in the center, 12 to 15 minutes, rotating the baking sheets halfway through. Let the cookies cool for a few minutes on the baking sheets, then transfer them to a rack to cool completely.
  • When the baking sheets have cooled completely, scoop the remaining dough onto 1 sheet and bake. Store the cookies in a tightly sealed container at room temperature for up to 5 days.
  • Variations:
  • For cakey cookies: Replace the light brown sugar and granulated sugar with 1 1/2 cups dark brown sugar. Bake at 375 degrees F until golden and tender, 12 to 15 minutes.
  • For crispy-cakey cookies: Bake the cookies at 425 degrees F until golden and crunchy on the outside, 8 to 10 minutes.
  • For chewy cookies: Use 1 cup light brown sugar and 1/4 cup corn syrup and omit the granulated sugar. Bake at 375 degrees F until golden and crunchy on the outside, and chewy on the inside, 10 to 12 minutes.
  • For super-chewy cookies: Substitute cake flour for all-purpose flour. Bake at 375 degrees F until golden with caramelized edges, 12 to 15 minutes.
  • For extra-crispy cookies: Bake the cookies at 300 degrees F until flat and crunchy, 24 to 28 minutes.

I have actually won contests with this recipe. I just adapted it from the Nestle Toll House recipe on the back of the package. I have yet to find a chocolate chip I like better than Toll House for cookies! My teens, church friends, fellow parents, & kids' teachers beg for these!

Anna’s chocolate chip cookie recipe is one of the most popular recipes, and today we will discuss some valuable tips that can help you create the perfect batch of cookies. 1. Selecting the Ingredients: The ingredients used in the recipe need to be of high quality to produce a delicious final product. Using fresh ingredients will result in better-tasting cookies. Here are some tips when selecting ingredients: - Use unsalted butter as it will give you more control over the amount of salt. - For the flour, use all-purpose flour or bread flour to make a chewier cookie. - Choose high-quality chocolate chips, preferably with at least 60% cacao content, to add a rich chocolate flavor to your cookies. 2. Measuring the Ingredients: Accurate measurement of ingredients is essential in baking. Here are some tips on how to measure your ingredients for your chocolate chip cookies: - Use a kitchen scale to accurately measure dry ingredients rather than measuring cups. This will ensure you have exact measurements. - When measuring flour using a measuring cup, avoid scooping the flour out of the container directly. Instead, spoon the flour into the measuring cup and level off the top with the back of a knife. 3. Mixing the Ingredients: Mixing the ingredients correctly is crucial, as it affects the texture of the cookies. Here are some tips for mixing the ingredients: - Cream the butter and sugar together until the mixture becomes light and fluffy, taking care not to overmix. - When adding the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mix gently by hand. Overmixing can lead to a dense cookie texture. 4. Resting the dough: Resting the dough allows the ingredients to meld together, producing a softer, chewier, and flavorful cookie. Here are some tips for resting the dough: - Allow the dough to rest in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes to an hour before baking. - Cover the dough with cling wrap before placing it in the fridge to prevent it from drying out. 5. Baking the Cookies: Baking the cookies is the final step in creating these delicious treats. Here are some tips for baking the cookies: - Preheat the oven before baking to ensure that the cookies bake evenly. - Avoid overcrowding the baking sheet when placing the cookie dough balls onto it. Space them approximately 2 inches apart. - Keep an eye on the cookies as they bake, and remove them from the oven before they start to brown too much. The cookies will continue to bake on the sheet even after being removed from the oven. Conclusion: Anna’s chocolate chip cookie recipe is easy to make, and using these valuable tips will help you make the perfect batch of cookies. Remember, preparation and measurement are key to producing the perfect cookie. Take your time and enjoy the process, and soon you will be enjoying delicious chocolate chip cookies at home.
